Today marks the start of the Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK's Drowning Prevention Week campaign.

We support this every year but it feels especially important given the tragic events we witnessed over the recent heatwave, both here in South Yorkshire and across the country.

Across the week, firefighters will be delivering throwline training sessions for members of the public and local businesses, running event stalls, and visiting local swimming baths to raise awareness of water safety at home.

Chris Tyler, Group Manager in South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue’s community safety team said: “Water in lakes and reservoirs is often much colder than you think – even on hot days. It can cause your body to go into cold water shock, leaving you helpless in seconds. This is why it is important to try and stay calm and get control of your breathing. This is your chance to call for help or, if you are able, attempt to swim to safety.

“As your muscles cool, your strength, endurance and muscle control reduce to the point when you can’t swim any longer, so you can’t rescue yourself. The point at which you can’t swim any more is called ‘swim failure’, and if you haven’t got out of the water or managed to get hold of a buoyancy aid (like a lifejacket) by this time, you will drown."

Carers, including family members, friends and neighbours, may face abuse from those they look after.

They might not be aware they are doing it or able to stop their behaviour due to their condition, but everyone has the right to live and work in a safe environment, free from abuse.

🔗If you would like some support as a carer, please contact the Wellbeing Team: https://www.doncaster.gov.uk/services/adult-social-care/carersoffer

If the abuse is intentional by the family member or partner that you are caring for, or if you are the person being cared for and are being harmed, this is domestic abuse. The Domestic Abuse Hub are here to support you:
