Dorset's hidden carers urged to come forward for support

Many people across Dorset provide regular unpaid care for a family member, friend or neighbour but do not identify themselves as carers. As a result, they may be missing out on valuable support, advice and services that could help them in their caring role.

The national action plan closely aligns with Dorset's own shared vision for carers and our ongoing commitment to helping carers feel recognised, valued and supported.

Support is available through the Dorset Carer Service

which provides information, advice, assessments, wellbeing support and services for young carers.

which is an online self-service platform available 24 hours a day.

Local Plan Update

Dorset Council is proposing a new route to preparing its Local Plan after Government changes to planning rules, housing requirements, and deadlines left the council unable to prepare a sound Local Plan under the previous system.

Cabinet (28 July) is being asked to prepare Dorset's Local Plan under the Government’s new national plan-making system. The council says making that decision now gives Dorset the best opportunity to carry forward work already completed.

SEND Stormbreak

Stormbreak are an organisation dedicated to supporting all primary-aged children in building the emotional tools to face life’s challenges. In collaboration with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) specialists, the team have been working hard to create some more supportive resources and materials for children with SEND.

Research suggests that up to 40% of children with SEND face mental health difficulties, with prevalence depending on the type and severity of need. Early intervention and tailored support are essential. Stormbreak are pleased to be able to share the outcomes of this work and would like to say a massive thank you to the children and staff at Winchelsea who played a huge role in its creation.

Julian’s Bridge Trial Ending Early

The Julian’s Bridge trial in Wimborne will end early, with full two-way traffic resuming on Thursday 18 June.

A robust body of evidence will have been collected, including extensive traffic monitoring and nearly 3,000 survey responses, alongside observations from peak and festival conditions.

We have listened carefully to the feedback from residents, businesses and road users throughout the trial and on balance, it is agreed that it would be inappropriate to continue the trial in its current form given the level of disruption experienced, and the focus will now be on analysing the evidence to inform next steps."

Road Closure - Lonnen Road

This won't come as a surprise to anyone who lives here, particularly given the depth of the enormous hole, but Lonnen Road has been closed at the Pilford Lane end to allow South West Water to carry out emergency repairs to a burst water main.

Apparently, it is expected to be completed by the 12th June, although they have booked it in for 21 days "just in case".

Road Adoption - Partial Lonsdale Road

The first stage (coloured Pink) of the adoption of Lonsdale Road has been completed, and I have received a copy of the Final Adoption Certificate.

Officers assure me that this is the first section, that work continues on the other areas, but that they can't give me an exact date as to when the next stage will be signed off.

Maritime Reserves Accreditation

New accreditation opportunities are now available for personnel in the Maritime Reserves, recognising the high-quality skills, training, and experience developed through service.

Delivered through the Defence Academy, this initiative strengthens the link between military training and nationally recognised qualifications, supporting both professional development and wider career opportunities.

As defence continues to invest in its people, accreditation plays a key role in ensuring that the expertise gained in service is recognised, transferable, and valued.
