🦆 At our June Memory Café on Thursday we welcomed back Natalie and Annaliese from Playful Paws with their Runner Ducks, Hens, Rabbits and Guinea Pig.

🍰 After tea and some lovely cakes made for us by members of Dyrham WI we spent time getting to know each of the animals, holding, grooming and making snacks for them to enjoy.

Our thanks to Playful Paws for bringing the animals to see us again.

🐓 We also enjoyed an animal themed quiz, wordsearch and some colouring activities as well as lots of great chats with volunteers and visitors.

🎈Clare led the singing of some animal themed songs and then a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday to us’ to mark the fourth anniversary of the Memory Cafe at Doynton! Of course the cafe ended with the big red balloon!

Our next cafe will take place on Thursday 2nd July - in the meantime if there is any information that you need, please do get in touch.

👏🏼 A Huge ‘Thank You’ to our volunteers! 👏🏼

🙂 This Volunteers Week we are celebrating all those lovely people who give their time, energy and talents to support The Memory Café at Doynton.

😍 There are twenty-five volunteers who regularly support us - not everyone is featured here but every contribution is greatly appreciated and we certainly could not run the Memory Café without this dedicated help. We are planning an event to thank our volunteers during the summer - in the meantime thank you all so much for all that you do!

ℹ️ If you are thinking about volunteering with us and would like to know more - do please get in touch!
You can make a big difference to the life of those affected by dementia and it is a rewarding role.

THE MEMORY CAFE IN JUNE

☕️ Our next free Memory Cafe get-together takes place at Doynton Village Hall, Toghill Lane, Doynton, BS30 5SY on Thursday 4th June from 2-4pm.

🙂 The Memory Cafe is run by volunteers from the local area and offers a warm and friendly welcome to all those from local villages and beyond who are living with dementia or memory loss, together with their family member or carer. This month we are celebrating our fourth birthday. 🎂

🦆 This month we welcome back ‘Playful Paws’ who visited last year bringing furry and feathered friends for us to meet.

Animals will also be the theme of our quiz and word search and other activities.

🎈 We will then sing with Clare and of course the café will end with the big red balloon!

📚 We have a small library of fiction books and some jigsaw puzzles - all to share/swap. They will be in the foyer for you to peruse. 🧩

We have greetings cards for sale at every cafe, these are sold at a bargain price for our funds and are kindly made for us by members of the card making group of Yate and Sodbury U3A club or have been donated for us to sell.

🍰 Our lovely cakes to enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee are being provided by members of Dyrham WI group this month. Thank you!

ℹ️ We have lots of books, leaflets and other resources available offering support for dementia and memory loss - to take or borrow - and amongst our volunteers there is much knowledge that can be shared too - please ask us on the day or contact us by email or message in advance if we can help in any way.

🙂 We look forward to seeing you. Please message us with any questions you may have about the Memory Cafe at Doynton or if you would like to be on our mailing list to receive details directly by email of each month’s cafe.

📢 Please follow us on Facebook to keep in touch and spread the word by sharing this post and our page with anyone who may be interested in coming along or anyone you know who may be interested in joining our team of volunteers. Thank you! 👏🏼

🙂 We have reached Saturday of Dementia Action Week and three of us as volunteers from the Memory Cafe will attend the ‘Let’s Talk Dementia’ event in Bristol today (see previous posts for full details). We will report back later!

❓ To conclude our series of comments from our visitors and their family members, today the focus is on social interactions that are important and which make a difference to those living with dementia…

💬 ‘Regular places to visit which become familiar'

💬 ‘Entertainment in social settings, singing and visual entertainment'

💬 ‘Meeting familiar people regularly in social settings help both the person with dementia and their carers'

We try at our monthly Memory Cafe to meet some of these needs and it is very important to us too to make relationships with our visitors and to have fun!

Thank you to all our visitors for sharing their thoughts with us to enable us to raise awareness of important areas of living with dementia during this week. 👏🏼

One of the topics that came up when we asked our Memory Cafe visitors and their family members about raising awareness about living with dementia - and things which could make a difference - was interactions with healthcare and other professionals.

These comments may at first appear to be contradictory but both are equally vital for the wellbeing of those living with dementia….

💬 ‘Being spoken to directly by health professionals and other people, rather than all questions being directed to a carer as soon as dementia is mentioned’

💬 ‘Ensuring that family member carers are aware of and involved in decision-making where possible, especially in the case of hospital stays’

🍰 At the Memory Cafe we know that our visitors love the treat of a variety of different home-made cakes to choose from with a cup of tea.

❓We asked our visitors about some of the things that make a real difference to the lives of those living with dementia and these comments reflect the responses that we received on the topic of food - both at home and when out - and meal-times.

💬 ‘Food tastes can change, at home we plan meals and allow for choice each week’

💬 ‘Consistency of meal times is important’

💬 ‘When out and about - need to find suitable food (not too many choices, some familiar foods)’

This week for Dementia Action Week we are continuing to focus on raising awareness within our community about some of th...

This week for Dementia Action Week we are continuing to focus on raising awareness within our community about some of the challenges faced by those living with dementia.

❓ We asked our visitors about some of the things that make a real difference to the lives of those living with dementia and these comments reflect the responses that we received:

💬 ‘Routine is vital, consistency of time when things happen during the day really helps’

💬 ‘Regular places to visit which become familiar and with familiar faces..’

💬 ‘Ease of access and good signage to places - eg toilet facilities'

We are grateful to our visitors and those who care for them for sharing their thoughts with us. 🙂
