It might be in a drawer or a box in the garage, shed or loft right now...

Old batteries. Wireless earbuds that stopped working. A power bank you haven't used in years. An old mobile phone you've been meaning to recycle. As well as mysterious cables!

Many everyday items contain lithium-ion batteries. When they're thrown away in general waste, they can be crushed during collection or processing and start fires.

Last year, there were more than 1,200 battery fires in UK bin lorries and waste facilities, a 71% increase on the previous year.

✅ Recycle loose batteries at supermarket or local battery collection points
✅ Take old phones, tablets, laptops, wireless earbuds and other electronics to your local household waste recycling centre
🚫 Never put batteries or battery-powered devices in your household bin, public bins or a skip

A few minutes sorting out unwanted batteries and devices can help protect waste crews, firefighters and your community.

As the hot, dry weather continues, you may notice an increased presence of our fire engines in your local area. Unfortunately, we are seeing a rise in fires in the open due to the prolonged dry conditions.

🚨 We are currently dealing with a fire on Reservoir Road. Residents and businesses in the area are advised to keep windows and doors closed while crews work at the scene. 🚨

Please help us prevent further incidents by following these simple safety tips:
• Dispose of ci******es safely
• Take your litter home with you
• Never light campfires in the countryside
• Do not use disposable BBQs in the countryside or open spaces
• If using a BBQ at home, keep it well away from fences, sheds and shrubs
• Never leave a BBQ unattended

🔥 One spark can change everything. With the current dry conditions, fires can spread extremely quickly. Damaging habitats, wildlife and putting nearby communities at risk.

Help us reduce unnecessary call outs by following these fire safety tips:

✅ Take your litter home or put it in a bin. Glass bottles and cans can reflect sunlight and increase the risk of a fire starting.
🚫 Now isn't the time for having a bonfire in the garden.
🧺 Pack a picnic instead of using a disposable BBQ.
🚬 Fully extinguish ci******es and dispose of them safely.
🚗 Never throw cigarette ends from a vehicle. Grass verges are incredibly dry at the moment.

• Keep BBQs away from fences, sheds and shrubs
