We’re nearly ready for Open Day this Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Entrance is FREE, there are over 30 stall holders showcasing what they do in terms of conservation and wildlife. Refreshments from Stuart’s of Driffield and plant sales. Cash only please 🙏

Pair of ruddy shelduck on south marsh east this morning. A black tern dropped in briefly in the thunderstorms. Alas the first harbinger of autumn appeared today in the form of a the first green sandpiper on its return migration… we always expect them around the 15th of June so before long it’ll be black tailed godwits… 🍁🍂

Preparations were afoot today even in the heavy rain to put up our main marquee ready for Open day this Sunday. Thanks to our volunteers for getting everything ready including the Kingsmill students putting out signs along Barmston drain. First Ringlet of the year recorded around I reservoir today, Little grebe with 2 young in front of North Lagoon gave visitors great views whilst they sheltered from the heavy rain 🌧️

Though the day started with damp weather, it didn't deter the wardens walk this morning. During the walk, we counted 156 Bee Orchids within the hay meadow heading towards Henge Hide, with some very impressive flower spikes! A very determined Swallow trying to build a nest at Reception Hide. Also rounding off the day is the welcome return of a herd of Boers Goats into Hempholme Meadow, video provided by Jasmine Pattison.

Some spectacular ichneumon wasps parasitising larvae under the bark of this decaying Scots pine this afternoon; the ‘sting’ is actually an ovipositor egg laying tube which the wasps lances into an unsuspecting grub which hatches and eats its host before emerging as an ichneumon ‘alien style’. Some good reports of kingfishers and cuckoos on north marsh today - join us on our warden walk free with standard admission tomorrow at 10am

Sightings from today; no reports of the north lagoon Norfolk hawker between some epic rain showers. Cuckoo and kingfishers shower well on north marsh where an adult was carrying food away whilst juveniles present - indicating a second pair?

A bit of an offsite today checking in on our woodland creation project at Cottingham; some good take up on the 38,000 trees planted in 2025 in spite of the dry summer last year. Watch this space for future volunteering opportunities as we continue to improve the habitat there.
