Join Pauline McLean as she talks to Frances Crawford about her highly acclaimed debut novel, A Bad, Bad Place.

As a passionate advocate of lifelong learning, Frances was delighted to graduate in 2022, age 60, with MLitt (Distinction) Creative Writing from Glasgow University.
In 2023, she won Bloody Scotland/ Glencairn Crime Short Story Competition and Frances signed with literary agents A.M.Heath in 2024. After a ten-way auction, her debut novel A BAD BAD PLACE was published by Transworld at Penguin in February 2026. The novel has been shortlisted for the 2026 Theakston McDermid Debut Award, and the Bloody Scotland Debut Prize.

Frances grew up in North Glasgow and credits the good people of Possilpark and Milton as her writing inspiration. She still lives in Glasgow with her family and likes libraries and punk rock.

⚽Join us for a chat and Q and A with football historian Iain Campbell Whittle of the Scottish Football Historians Group all about the first football champions of the world, Renton FC. ⚽

Founded in 1872, Renton F.C. with their motto of "Never Say Die" were original members of the Scottish Cup tournament, defeating Kilmarnock 2 -0 on 18th November 1873. As this was the first of three games to kick off in the Cup that day, this is believed to be the very first official competitive football match to take place in Scotland. The team were knocked out in a semi-final clash against Queens Park reaching the final the following year, only to be defeated once again by Queens Park. Renton finally lifted the cup in 1885, beating Vale of Leven F.C., and again in 1888. The 1888 victory was followed by a match against the FA Cup winner West Bromwich Albion, with Renton winning the match with four goals to one in front of six thousand spectators at Cathkin Park, Glasgow. With football exclusively being played in England and Scotland at the time Renton were proclaimed "Champions of the World" and a sign stating this was proudly displayed outside their ground at Tontine Park.

Back in 1888, Renton FC stormed to a 4–1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Cathkin Park, becoming the very first Champions of the World. Now, that incredible piece of football heritage is back!
