We've been fortunate to have Libby's support and involvement in our current exhibition 'Celebrating GirlGuiding in D&G'.

It's Volunteers' Week and the good news just keeps coming in! We're proud to celebrate another outstanding volunteer, this time a council staff member who has just this week been recognised with a national award for their volunteering.

Libby Ong, Economic Development Officer with Dumfries and Galloway Council, has been named Volunteer Youth Worker of the Year at YouthLink Scotland's National Youth Work Awards 2026.
Sponsored by Young Scot, Libby received the award for her voluntary role with Girlguiding Scotland , where she serves as County Commissioner for Dumfries and Galloway. In this role, she supports 578 girls and more than 150 volunteers, helping to create opportunities for young people across rural communities.

From organising county-wide events to supporting local groups and leading international experiences, including taking 12 girls to India’s World Centre, Libby’s volunteering helps young people build confidence, ambition and a sense of belonging.

Alongside this, Libby also volunteers within the council as Chair of our council's Women’s Staff Network, supporting colleagues and helping to create space for connection, discussion and positive change.

Libby’s achievement is a fantastic example of the difference volunteers make across Dumfries and Galloway in our communities, in our workplaces and in the lives of others. Congratulations, Libby. 👏

Lovely old photo of the River Nith in Dumfries just by The Caul. The Old Bridge House Museum is just out of view on the right (on Devorgilla Bridge).
The museum contains a display about how the riverside has changed over the years - which is really clear to see from this photo - many of the houses and the large advertising signs are now no longer there.
Fortunately, the Bridge House itself, built in 1660 survived!

Women's History in Dumfries Museum. We've just added books for adults and children as well as a film about Dr Flora Murray.
They are right next to our new case on The Women of Dumfries so they're easy to find when you visit. You can also browse books of Dr Kissling's photos too as his display case is nearby.
