🦋WWT Caerlaverock update 🦋

It's been a busy week for us here at WWT Caerlaverock. The hot weather has reduced the water in our ponds by quite a margin - however, as we are some of the last remaining waterbodies in the area we are drawing in migrating waders (like the common snipe pictured) from the area to come by as we can provide them with undisturbed food and shelter. We've had to wish some of our wildflower meadows farewell as the land management processes of haymaking have begun, using the (potentially) last window of sun to dry out the hay.

Large numbers of grey herons and little egrets have gathered in our Folly Pond - recent count was 28 egrets in one place! - and the butterflies are still in full swing. The damselfly and dragonfly populations are here, who are still using our paradise as a breeding ground, and let's not forget our pair of glossy ibis who are still residing with us, now moving from waterbody to waterbody as it gets a little more crowded.

With some wetter weather ahead of us, we are looking forward to what the rest of the summer brings us!

In the sunshine, you can really see how glossy they actually are - purples, greens, yellows.

Thank you once again to our Reserve Warden Rebecca Davies for taking this incredible photos!

In honour of the Big Butterfly Count 2026, here are some photos taken of butterflies taken here at WWT Caerlaverock.

We have painted lady, meadow brown, green-veined white, peacock, small tortoiseshell, as well as common blue, large skipper, and even clouded yellow!

Have a read of our very own Izzy Rigby's blog about what species we found when we did our own Big Butterfly Count here - https://www.wwt.org.uk/wetland-centres/caerlaverock/news/join-in-on-the-big-butterfly-count-2026

Our site is bursting with them this summer, so make sure you come down here to experience them yourself!

Our pair of Glossy Ibis are still in residence on the Folly Pond.

This fantastic photograph was taken by a visitor, Sharon Watson, who generously has given us a copy for our records.

This rare waterbird has been making increasing appearances in Scotland over the last few years, but has yet to successfully breed in this country. Hopefully they decide to stick around long enough to encourage more to stay!

Come by WWT Caerlaverock to see these gorgeous birds before they migrate to more southern climates for winter.

The Night Shift: Moth Trapping

A new blog is out today, written by our Reserve Warden Rebecca Davies. Moths are super important and valuable creatures, and we regularly record and review which winged visitors come through our reserve. Have a read of her article to learn about some species, including Buff Tip, Garden Tiger, and Poplar Hawk Moth!

https://www.wwt.org.uk/wetland-centres/caerlaverock/news/the-night-shift-moth-trapping

To kickstart our new feature, Rebecca has chosen her favourite find to be our first ever Moth of the Month! Have a look at the gorgeous Mother of Pearl Moth. One of the UK's largest micromoths, this summertime moth rests with all four wings open, showing its gorgeous shimmery colourings, and is most often found amongst hedgerows and nettles, where it lays its eggs.
