Introducing the Finalists for the Dumfries Shine Community Award 🌟

We are delighted to announce the three finalists for our brand-new Dumfries Shine Community Award, which will be presented at the DG Chamber Business Awards.

The award has been created to recognise individuals and groups who go above and beyond to make Dumfries a cleaner, greener, and more welcoming place for everyone. Through our Dumfries Shine Initiative, we have had the privilege of working alongside some incredible volunteers and community organisations, and choosing just three finalists was no easy task.

👏 The People's Project
A dedicated team whose hard work can be seen across Dumfries, from maintaining Castledykes Park and town centre planters to organising litter picks, often in the early hours of the morning. Their commitment to improving our local environment and supporting community initiatives has been truly inspiring.

🌱 A Patch Ae Land
Based in Sandside, this thriving community garden provides a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for people of all ages and backgrounds. Through community events, wellbeing activities, and environmental education, they make a positive difference every day while helping to tackle issues such as littering, fly-tipping, and dog fouling.

🍍 Allan Airley
A familiar face at our clean-up events, Allan has become an invaluable volunteer, always willing to lend a hand with litter picking and grounds maintenance. As a full-time carer, volunteering provides him with an opportunity to connect with others and support his community. His enthusiasm, dedication, and trademark pineapple hat have made him a much-loved member of the Dumfries Shine family.

Each finalist represents the very best of community spirit, dedication, and pride in Dumfries. We would like to thank them all for the incredible contribution they make to our town and congratulate them on becoming finalists for this year's Dumfries Shine Community Award.

Despite the wet June weather, Jo visited the Dumfries Adoptive Railway Gardeners (DARG) yesterday to meet with Frank Jones and discuss potential future projects.

It was a fantastic opportunity to tour the impressive gardens at Dumfries Railway Station and see first-hand the dedication and hard work that has earned DARG multiple awards and recognition over the years. Jo also had the pleasure of meeting volunteers Donald Stirling and John Hunter, whose passion and commitment help make the gardens such a valued community asset.

Do you have an interest in gardening? Would you like to help enhance green spaces in Dumfries? Or perhaps you'd like to get involved in a future Dumfries Town Board project?

If so, we'd love to hear from you.

We're also keen to celebrate and promote the wonderful gardens and gardening groups across Dumfries. If you're involved with a community garden, allotment, or any other green space that deserves recognition, please get in touch. We'd be delighted to come along, learn more about what you do, and help share your story with the wider community.

Together, we can help make Dumfries an even greener, more vibrant place to live, work and visit.

Message us directly or email [email protected] to get involved or tell us about your garden project.

✨ Meet the Team Monday ✨

Today, we are pleased to introduce James Findlay, who has joined the Dumfries Town Board.

“My journey to the Town Board started from a very personal place, a strong belief that fairness and accountability should be at the heart of every local decision. After experiencing the challenges of navigating regional contracting first hand. I became determined to push for better, more transparent outcomes for everyone involved.

That experience now shapes the perspective I bring to the Board, where I am committed to ensuring every voice is heard and every opportunity is fair. At the core of it all, I am focused on helping build a future where the town operates with clarity, integrity, and real effectiveness for its community.”

Please join us in welcoming James to the Dumfries Town Board! 👏

If you’ve got some spare space in your window or community notice board and would like to display a poster, give us a shout and we’ll pop round next week.

Prefer a digital copy instead? Email us at [email protected] and we’ll send one over.

Andy from the Dumfries and Galloway Council Community Safety Team delivered a Community Awareness Workshop at A Patch Ae Land in Sandside this afternoon, facilitated by Dumfries Town Board.

Andy worked with both children and adults to raise awareness around littering and dog fouling and explained to the children that there’s no such thing as a “dog poo fairy”!

The children were then tasked with designing their own posters, which will be turned into signs and displayed around their local area.

This initiative is all about empowering communities to work together and tackle local issues head-on. We’ll report back in a few weeks to share the children’s designs and see how the project is progressing.
