Dumfries Shine is back on the streets this November!

We’re getting ready to give Dumfries a little extra sparkle ahead of the Christmas Lights Switch-On, and we want YOU to be part of it!

From 16th to 20th November, we’ll be out and about helping to keep our town clean, green and thriving.

📍 Where: The Hub, 24–26 Friars Vennel, Dumfries
🕙 When: 10am–1pm
👕 What’s included: Free T-shirt, hi-vis vest and refreshments for volunteers.

As we all know, the Scottish weather can be unpredictable, so we may not be out for the full week. Keep an eye on our social media for updates closer to the time.

WHAT’S ON WEDNESDAY | THE DUMFRIES SOUL WEEKENDER

Get ready for a weekend filled with soul, music and unforgettable live performances as The Dumfries Soul Weekender returns! 🎶

Firmly established as a standout event on the soul calendar, this three-day extravaganza brings together over 20 top DJs from across the UK, alongside fantastic live performances.

With two vibrant rooms celebrating an incredible mix of black music genres, there’s something for every music lover, including Motown, Northern Soul, Philly, Crossover, Disco, Jazz, Funk, House, Soulful House and Gospel House.

From Monday 16th to Friday 20th November, we’ll be back out and about, bringing our community together to help keep Dumfries looking its best.

We’ve set aside a whole week for our November Shine, giving us a little extra flexibility thanks to the lovely Scottish weather! 🌧️☀️ We all know how unpredictable it can be, so having the full week means we can make the most of any dry spells and get as much done as possible.

Whether you’re a regular volunteer or someone who would love to get involved for the first time, everyone is welcome. Every little bit makes a difference, and together we can continue to make our town a cleaner, brighter and more welcoming place for everyone.

Free T-shirts and hi-vis will be available for volunteers, along with refreshments to keep you going!

✨ One Year of Dumfries Shine ✨

And then… it was all go for the first anniversary of Dumfries Shine!

What a year it has been. What started as a simple idea in spring 2025 has grown into a community-led initiative bringing together volunteers, businesses, community groups and the public to make a difference across Dumfries. 💛

The team have worked throughout the year to get us to where we are today, and we couldn't have done it without the amazing support of everyone who has taken part.

This year, we wanted to go beyond the town centre and reach areas across Dumfries that needed a little extra TLC. Each day brought a new list of areas highlighted by the public, and our volunteers got to work.

And something amazing started to happen, the number of bags being collected was getting smaller and smaller. We even heard volunteers saying, “We're having to walk that little further to gather more litter!"

That's a fantastic sign that people are taking pride in their town and helping to make Dumfries Shine again. ✨

And of course, we couldn't finish the anniversary without Shine Fest!

Held on the Friday, it brought local groups, schools, volunteers and the public together to enjoy the cleaner town centre and an amazing atmosphere filled with local music and entertainment.

From an idea in spring 2025 to where we are today, look what can happen when a community comes together.

Yesterday, members of the Dumfries Town Board and Dumfries Bloom and Shine were out and about with the lovely Anne Croucher from Tesco, who has very kindly donated a wonderful range of plants, plant pots and bug hotels to Dumfries Bloom.

We are so grateful for Anne’s generosity and for thinking of our community. We can’t wait to see all the different designs, ideas and creative projects that come from these fantastic donations.

There are already lots of exciting ideas being discussed, and we’re looking forward to seeing the plants and bug hotels find new homes across Dumfries and bring a little more colour and wildlife into our community.

A huge thank you once again to Anne for such a thoughtful and generous donation. Your support really does mean so much to us, and we can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!

❄️ Shine Through the Winter ❄️

The first Shine Week may have come to an end, but that certainly didn't mean the work stopped.

As the winter months arrived, our volunteers and the Dumfries Shine team continued to hit the streets, preparing the town ahead of the Christmas Light Switch-On in November and the Big Burns Supper events in January.

Even when the weather wasn't on our side, we still managed to get out for a couple of days, helping to tidy up the town and make it more welcoming for everyone coming into Dumfries to enjoy our local shops, businesses and facilities.

But the winter months weren't just about cleaning.

They also gave the Shine team an opportunity to get out and about, visiting different community groups and centres across Dumfries. We wanted to learn more about the amazing work already happening within our communities, meet the people behind it and find out about upcoming events and activities that Shine could get involved with.

These conversations helped us build new relationships, understand what matters to different parts of our community and look at how we could work together in the future. 🤝💛

While we were out making a difference, we also started to notice something…

The number of bags of litter being collected was becoming smaller and smaller.

And while this was fantastic news, it also made us think: what could Shine become next?

The team began looking ahead, planning for another Dumfries Shine in April and thinking about how we could help prepare the town before the Guid Nychburris festivities.

As the next Dumfries Shine 2026 was fast approaching, we started asking ourselves what more we could do, how we could build on what had already been achieved, and how we could make the first anniversary of Shine even bigger and better.

The first year had taught us a lot.

Now it was time to start thinking about the next chapter… ✨💛

✨ September Arrived , And Shine Began ✨

After months of planning, Dumfries Shine Week arrived from Monday 1 September to Friday 5 September 2025, and we hit the ground running!

It was truly amazing to see volunteers come out across Dumfries to give their time and energy to help clean up their town and surrounding areas. The sun was shining, the volunteers were smiling, and there was a real sense of community spirit. ☀️💛

Throughout the week, we made new connections with individuals, community groups and local businesses who all played their part in making Shine happen.

The difference being made didn't go unnoticed either. ITV Border News came along to capture the work taking place, speak to those involved and learn more about the vision behind Shine and the lasting difference we hope it will make to Dumfries.

And then it was time to celebrate! 🎉

Shine Fest brought the week to a close on Friday 5 September at the Plainstanes, with local bands performing and the public coming along to enjoy live music in a cleaner, brighter High Street.

But the numbers really show what was achieved:

Nearly 500 bags of litter collected
Over 500 Volunteers too!
Almost every High Street bin cleaned
Bus shelters cleaned too

What started as a pilot had already shown us what is possible when people come together with one shared ambition — to make their town cleaner, brighter and more welcoming.

1–5 September 2025 wasn't just the first Shine Week. It was the beginning of something much bigger. 💛✨
