We still have a few spaces left for the upcoming Bat Night (talk and walk) next week, on Friday 4 September.

Bats are often misunderstood and less well known as birds are. Yet, they are pretty awesome and useful creatures. Join us for an evening of discovering more about bats here in South Scotland and have a go at identifying some of them.

The event will begin with a short illustrated talk, before we head out to find some bats on the reserve. We will provide a limited number of bat detectors and infra-red cameras but please bring a torch if you have one.

There is no age limit to this event but please note that this would probably not be suitable for young children (under 7 years). The walk will also be wheelchair accessible.

If interested, please check our website at: https://events.rspb.org.uk/events/153117

Don't you just love the chattering and chirping noises they make?

It has been lovely to see lots of Swallows and House Martins at RSPB Mersehead in recent weeks. It won't be long before they migrate back to Africa for the winter ๐Ÿชถ

There's still time to find these incredibly agile moths, the Hummingbird Hawk-moth, between some much needed rain showers. A moth that hovers at a speed of 70-80 wing beats per second much like its name sake the Hummingbird. This one showing off its long proboscis (straw like tongue used to feed on the nectar of tubular flowers) on Devils-bit Scabious at the Mull of Galloway this week.

We were delighted to spot a Redstart on camera trap footage at RSPB Mersehead this week. The first bird to appear in the video is a Reed Bunting, the Redstart appears towards the end of the video and is easily identified by its bright colouration.

Redstarts are a summer visitor to the UK where they spend most of their time in trees. They are more commonly seen across the north and west of the UK and are a breeding species at our RSPB Wood of Cree reserve. The bird seen at Mersehead will be starting its migration back to trans-Saharan Africa for the winter.

Find out more about Redstarts on the link below:
