Dunbar Coastguard Rescue Team was called out yesterday in support of Eyemouth Coastguard following reports of kayakers in difficulty near Pease Bay.

On investigation it was confirmed that assistance was not required. We are grateful to the member of the public who called with concerns. We count on people to inform us of anybody potentially in danger, and often such calls can be the difference between somebody being rescued or not. Whilst on this occasion assistance wasn’t required, we urge anybody who has concerns about people in the water or on the coast to call 999 and ask for COASTGUARD so that we can make our own assessment.

Dunbar Coastguard Rescue Team responded to an incident at the harbour this week where an individual sustained injuries after tombstoning.

HM Coastguard advice is simple. Do not jump or dive from cliffs, rocks or jetties into the sea as it carries extreme risk to life. We respond to several incidents each year of this nature, usually requiring hospitalisation.

There are a number of reputable organisations in the area who conduct organised coasteering with supervision and safety equipment which offers a safer alternative.

If you see anyone in trouble at the coast, please call 999 and ask for COASTGUARD.

Dunbar Coastguard Rescue Team were called out to Pease Bay yesterday to assist people on inflatable SUPs and kayaks who were struggling to get safely back to shore due to an increase in wind conditions.

Those involved managed to safely recover to shore.

Eyemouth CRT and lifeboats from RNLI Dunbar and St. Abbs were also on scene.

On this occasion conditions changed quickly on the water which happens frequently.

We advise anyone taking to the sea on inflatable vessels in particular to check the weather conditions carefully for the entire day, even if conditions look fine at the start. Free apps such as Windy and Surfline can be really useful as they give wind speed and direction as well as swell conditions.

Only go out in conditions in line with your skills and experience. For beginners, avoid going into the sea when there is wind speed over 5-10mph, especially if it is an offshore or side wind.

We strongly urge you to consider lessons or joining a group tour, especially if you are new to the sport or area, with companies such as Coast to Coast in Dunbar offering really good options.

Finally, carry a phone in a waterproof case and if you get into difficulties call 999 and ask for COASTGUARD.

Dunbar Coastguard investigated a couple of separate cases yesterday of potentially historic ordnance on our beaches.

This time in the Ravensheugh and Peffer Sands area. Fortunately nothing dangerous was found on this occasion.

If you do come across anything suspicious on the beach please do not touch it or attempt to move it, keep your distance, and call it in by dialling 999 and asking for COASTGUARD. We will then be able to assess and deal with it.

It helps a lot if you are able to give an exact location using a grid reference or What3Words on your phone, and if safe to do so, to take a photo.

Suspicious items might look like corroded metal or even partially stony in appearance and could appear cylindrical in shape.

Due to East Lothian’s military past it would not be unusual for ordnance to wash up (but also a good chance it’s something else!) so please help keep others safe by calling in anything that concerns you. A big thank you to those who have done so recently.

Dunbar Coastguard Rescue Team were called out last night to assist a person who had sustained an injury near the Leisure Pool. North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team Dunbar Fire and Rescue. and RNLI Dunbar Lifeboats were tasked in order to recover and treat the individual. If you get into trouble along our coast please call 999 and ask for COASTGUARD. We can then coordinate other assets as required.

Dunbar Coastguard Rescue Team were dispatched to Pease Bay yesterday afternoon following reports of people in difficulty in the water. On investigation those in the water were spearfishing and did not require assistance.

Those who called the Coastguard with their concerns did exactly the right thing and allowed us to assess the situation ourselves. If ever in doubt as to whether somebody is in trouble in the water, don’t hesitate to call 999 and ask for COASTGUARD.

Here is some unexploded ordnance found on Belhaven Beach yesterday. This still contained high explosive material despite the corrosion and had to be destroyed by an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

If you see any unusual objects uncovered on the beach, especially after storms or high tides, call 999 and ask for COASTGUARD. We will then task the appropriate agencies to respond. Do not attempt to touch or move any items.

A warning to all those that use our beaches around Dunbar.

We occasionally receive reports of ordnance washed up or uncovered on our local beaches, usually stemming from the WW2 era.

Whilst it may look harmless, please be advised there is a significant likelihood that it could still present a danger. For example, today a series of controlled explosions were needed at Belhaven due to live WW2 era ordnance being discovered.

If you see an object of an unusual size or shape on the beach, especially after bad weather or a high tide, it could be unexploded ordnance.

Please don’t touch it or move it. Call 999 and ask for COASTGUARD. We will take the necessary steps with the relevant partner authorities to keep people safe.

This time of the year tends to be one of the busiest as people make the most of our coastal areas, especially when the weather is good. Today the team has been out revalidating in water rescue and rope rescue techniques. Two skills called on frequently around Dunbar. If you see anyone you think may be in need of assistance in or around our coast, please don’t hesitate to call 999 and ask for COASTGUARD.
