Since The Salvation Army was born on the streets of the East End of London in 1865, we have gone from strength to strength – carrying on the commitment of our founders to serve God and to serve suffering humanity by fighting against social injustice. In 1878 The Christian Mission was renamed The Salvation Army. As military terminology became more commonplace, Booth became known as the 'General', a suitable shortening of the title of 'General Superintendent' that he held as the head of The Christian Mission. A 'Deed of Constitution' outlining his duties and responsibilities, which included the power to appoint a successor, was drawn up. Mission station preachers were given the rank of Captain and uniforms suitable to the ranks followed. A military discipline governed the lives of the officers. Writing in 'The Salvationist' in 1879 Booth summed up the purpose of the Army in the following simple but striking way: "We are a salvation people - this is our specialty - getting saved and keeping saved, and then getting somebody else saved, and then getting saved ourselves more and more until full salvation on earth makes the heaven within, which is finally perfected by the full salvation without, on the other side of the river." The Salvation Army is the largest provider of social care in the UK today, after the government. The work started in the 1880s and continues to grow and develop in a range of areas including homelessness, addiction services and anti human trafficking. Music forms an integral part of Salvation Army worship and evangelism. Bands and songster brigades are an important part of church life and public events with the brass band as the most recognised feature of Salvation Army music.

🕯️ LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE! 🕯️

What a powerful morning of worship and praise we shared at Dundee Salvation Army, reflecting on how we can bring light into a world that often feels so dark.

📖 Through Ephesians 5:8–14, we were reminded that we are called to live as children of light.

With so many troubling stories in the news, and as Halloween approaches with its darker traditions and pagan origins, we reflected on how much our world needs the hope and light of Jesus.

🕯️ But what good is a candle if it just sits on a shelf gathering dust?

A candle is made to shine, and so are we!

We were challenged not to keep our faith to ourselves, living as though it’s “you in your little corner, and I in mine”, but to come together and let God’s light shine through our words, actions and kindness.

Imagine the difference we could make if we all allowed the light of Jesus to shine through us, right here in Dundee!

As we head into a new week, may we not simply speak about God’s light, but live it, bringing hope, love and kindness wherever we go.

The darker the world feels, the more important it is that we let our light shine. ✨

🍫 FOOD FOR THOUGHT This Week come from A Box of Celebrations

We all know what happens when a box of Celebrations gets opened! 😂

The favourites disappear first… and there’s always a few left at the bottom that nobody seems to want!

But here’s a thought… 🤔

Do we sometimes treat people the same way?

In church, some people are front and centre, while others quietly work behind the scenes. But every person has a part to play.

📖 1 Corinthians 12:27 (NIV)
“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

God doesn’t have a box of favourites. Every person matters, every gift has value, and every part of the body is needed.

So next time you open a box of Celebrations, remember…

We’re all different, but we’re better together!

💭 Here’s today’s challenge: Are we making everyone feel valued, or are we leaving some people at the bottom of the box?

🍂 Food for Thought this week Changing Colours

Walking through Camperdown Park this morning, autumn was putting on quite a display. 🍁 The low morning light caught the trees as greens gave way to brilliant yellows, oranges and reds, a reminder that the season is changing right before our eyes.

Same park. Same paths. New colours.

Life has seasons too. Circumstances change, plans change, and we change. But through it all, Jesus remains the same.

The question is: are we simply changing our colours to fit our surroundings, or is Jesus changing us from the inside out?

📖 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV)
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

God calls us to become more like Jesus, more loving, patient, forgiving and faithful.

🍁 So next time you notice the changing colours in Camperdown, ask yourself:

The season is changing around me, but how is Jesus changing me?

What a thought-provoking time of worship and praise we shared at Dundee Salvation Army this morning.

📖 Through Genesis 2:4–9 & 15–17, we were reminded that God created a world for us not simply to enjoy, but to work it and take care of it. Creation is God’s gift, but caring for it is a shared responsibility, a partnership with Him.

As we continue thinking about Harvest, we were reminded that “all good gifts around us are sent from Heaven above”. We can plant and tend, but ultimately it is God who provides and gives the growth.

And Harvest is about more than crops and food. It asks us what we are planting here in Dundee, and what kind of community we are helping to grow.

🙏 We were left with two challenging questions to take away, pray about and reflect upon:

What do you want to see God do in your/our community?

How can you partner with God to achieve this?

May we not simply ask God to change our community, but be willing to ask how He might use us as part of that change.

🌾 We plough, we scatter, we care, but God gives the growth.
