Street of the Week: Fisher Street

Perhaps an obvious street name here. This street was largely populated by members of the fishing community, which makes sense when you think about where this is. It has also been called Fish Street, Fisher Row and Beach Street. The fisherman of Broughty Ferry largely caught white fish, including herring, for which they could travel as far as Shetland in the north or Suffolk in the south. The women in the community would dig for bait, baited the lines and carried the fish to market. Fisher Street has also been home to a Lifeboat station since 1862. Most of the original crew were members of the fishing community.

This street was laid out in the 1860s and the first buildings appeared in 1863. The street was so named as it was on the Craigie Estate, owned by the Guthrie family. The street and the grid layout of this area was originally planned in the 1830s but not built for 3 decades. In 1871 it only went as far as Kemback Street but was later extended to Morgan Street.

Wellfield Works to the north of the street was built in 1866. A cooling pond was at the southern corner with Morgan Street until at least the 1920s.
