This the rear of the 3 storey tenement which sat on the corner of Hawkhill and 2 Small's Wynd. A back court entrance divides the two buildings and runs the length of the rear of the buildings to Wallace's Pend.

Street of the Week: Campbell Street

This street was built in the mid 1870s on what was then part of the Dudhope Estate. At the time the estate was owned by William MacBean Rankine, who inherited the estate from a distant relative, Richard Gardner in 1862. He was the second son of John Campbell, 9th Lord Kilberry, and changed his name, presumably when he inherited the estate. His grandmother was Margaret Rankine. The estate was sold to Dundee Corporation in1920 and used for multiple housing schemes in the 1920s and 1930s.

Initially the street just went between Cobden Street (then called Union Place) and Gardner Street. It was extended to Gardner Street in the 1920s when the Dudhope Flatted homes were built, and then Law Crescent when the Lawside homes were built in the 1930s.

Street of the Week: Benvie Road

You would expect maybe that Benvie Road was a road that led to Benvie, but this is not so. The name was decided at a Commissioners meeting in 1870 but its possible that the street and the buildings on it weren't built for a couple of years. Initially it only went from Fyffe Street to Mitchell Street, but was extended beyond Cleghorn Street later in the century.

The street was the home to the Garden Works, a jute mill ran by William Cleghorn (as in Cleghorn Street). The street was also used as the vehicle access point for Logie House until its demolition in 1896. Also, for some strange reason quite a few police officers lived on this street. In the 1902 Dundee Directory there were 2 detectives and 4 constables living on the street. The nearest police station was at West Bell Street so I'm not sure why...

In case you missed it, we featured on a recent episode of the BBC's Fake or Fortune (s14 ep2). There was even a brief cameo from our City Archivist Martin Allan! We won't spoil the ending but this is a really interesting story about a Dundee born artist.
