Still Life, Teapot and Fruit by Samuel John Peploe RSA (1871-1935)

One of four works by Peploe that feature in our latest exhibition, Living Colour: Celebrating 200 Years of the RSA. Peploe was part of a group of artists known as the Scottish Colourists. He painted landscapes, seascapes and portraits but is best-known for his still lifes.

The artist spent much of his life in pursuit of the perfect still life – ‘There is so much in mere objects, flowers, leaves, jugs, what not – colours, forms, relation – I can never see the mystery coming to an end.’

We're keeping up the with the cow theme for this week's archive image with two postcards featuring the Public Park. Did you know that cows used to graze there? It wasn't until 1929 that the Town Council decided the Park should no longer be used for this purpose, though they did briefly consider a proposal to introduce sheep instead. Years later, during the Second World War, the cows made a temporary return to the Park.

Despite the sunshine and blue skies, we were feeling very autumnal this weekend at our Sunday Craft Session. The kids produced some amazing paper plate toadstools, and we couldn't resist taking them out to the garden for a quick photo.

We host free drop-in craft sessions here at DCLG every Sunday from 2-3:30pm. There’s something different every week so, bring the kids along and join in the fun.

We can't believe it's been over a month since our first Fife Reading Challenge came to a close! We've already began planning next year's challenge but we wanted to celebrate the amazing amount of reading that happened this summer and some of our amazing prize winners!

With over 3000 people across Fife getting involved and 950 of you finishing the challenge we are overjoyed as are our 19 prize winners with how this year's challenge has gone!

⚽ Scotland captain Caroline Weir is inspiring a new generation in Dunfermline.

A football shirt worn by the Dunfermline-born midfielder during Scotland's match against Switzerland at East End Park is now on display at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries.

Caroline, who began her football journey with local club Elgin Star and now plays for OL Lyonnes in France, donated the shirt to our collection and hopes it will encourage more young people to get involved in sport and follow their ambitions.

She said: "It's a real pleasure to have been asked to donate an item to the museum and to feature alongside historic figures from the city's history. I'd be delighted if it helped to inspire the next generation of footballers from the area and encouraged them to dream big."

Our Collections Curator, Kirke Kook, added: "We're proud to have one of her shirts on display here in Dunfermline and, like Caroline, we hope it will inspire other young players to aim high and follow in her footsteps."

An interesting image here and one we don't have a lot of details for. The place is Upper Station Road, one of the old Dunfermline streets that no longer exists. It was off James Street, roughly where the entrance to the carpark is today. The company was W. Smith Lesslie, Wholesale Fruit and Potato Salesmen, a business that began in Kirkcaldy and later opened branches in Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath. We've got the company listed at these premises in our Fife Trade Directories between the 1930s and 1960 but prior to that, the company was based in Carnegie Street.
