Dunholme Community Allotments

Dunholme Parish Council is delighted to share some exciting news - we have recently completed the purchase of a plot of land alongside Market Rasen Road, part of which will be developed into allotments for local residents.

This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting wellbeing, sustainability, and community spirit. Allotments offer a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to grow their own fruit, vegetables, and flowers, while also providing a peaceful outdoor space to relax and connect with nature.

We are now inviting expressions of interest from anyone who would like to become a plot holder. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or a complete beginner keen to learn, we would love to hear from you. Demand for allotments is often high, so we encourage you to get in touch early to register your interest.

In addition, the Parish Council would greatly value input from residents who have previous experience of allotment gardening, especially if you have been involved in an Allotment Association. Your knowledge and insights could play an important role in helping us shape and manage the site for the benefit of all users.

If you are interested in taking on a plot, or if you have experience you would be willing to share, please contact the Parish Council. (email [email protected]) with your name and address.

Further details about the allotments, including availability and next steps, will be provided in due course. (Priority will be given to applications from Dunholme residents.)

We look forward to seeing this new community space flourish and hope it will become a well-loved resource for many years to come.

Did you know in the "good old days" different pockets of land in the village were given site names.

The site of the new allotments was called "Sheepwash Hill" and so we have decided to give our allotments that exact name as well to preserve the history of the site.

More exciting allotment news coming tomorrow at 6.30pm

Many thanks to Arborez Ltd for delivering a large load of woodchip free of charge for our newly planted Community Orchard. This has been applied as a mulch round each tree, increasing the absorption of water for the trees as well as improving the look of the area :-)

A New Community Orchard for Dunholme

Dunholme Parish Council is delighted to announce the creation of a new community orchard for the village.

In early April we enjoyed a fantastic morning planting the orchard on the Manor Estate open space in Dunholme. A team of ten volunteers, including helpers from Lincolnshire Co-op came together to plant 30 fruit trees. These include heritage varieties of apples, pears, plums and gages, many of which originate from Lincolnshire, with wonderful names such as “Swan’s Egg”, “Bollingbroke Beauty” and “Peasgood Nonsuch”.

Thankfully, we were ably assisted by AKO Groundworks Ltd, who took on the otherwise back-breaking task of digging all the planting holes.

The trees have been provided through the Community Orchard Project run by Lincolnshire County Council in partnership with the Lincolnshire Co-op, through the retailer’s Community Champions scheme that supports local good causes and charities around Lincolnshire and surrounding areas. The initiative aims to create 10 new community orchards across the county, adding to the 30 already established.

Looking ahead, the orchard will provide a wonderful opportunity to bring residents of all ages together, offering year round activities for the community, from winter pruning work parties to spring blossom days, summer pruning and fruit thinning tasks, summer picnics and autumn picking sessions. We may even take part in the national Apple Day celebrations each October.
Over the next few weeks we will be setting up a Dunholme Orchard team (our first task will be to come up with a better name!). If you would like to get involved we would love to hear from you.
