No Wrong Path - Deirdrie's Story

If I'm honest I wasn't the best behaved at school and was quite disruptive. Looking back, I do wish I had studied more but, even when working in the local chip shop at 13, I had a great work ethic.

I started my career journey in health and social care in the community with the independent sector. I saw an opportunity for a part-time Social Care Assistant position within the Mackenzie Day Centre with the NHS. When I attended my interview, I remember seeing those who were attending the centre taking part in music and movement. I could hear fun and laughter throughout the corridors and received a very warm welcome. I said to my husband that if I didn’t get the job, I would try to volunteer there, as I felt so relaxed and instantly knew that this was where my NHS journey should begin.

For nearly a year, I worked two jobs—out in the community and at Mackenzie Day Centre. It was challenging for both me and my family, but I knew from the atmosphere that this was where I needed to be.

Another opportunity came up to apply for a full-time Social Care Assistant, and I was fortunate enough to get that job. I worked hard to build my confidence, knowledge, and understanding of the service, as I was eager to progress—dedication and continuous learning were key. After a few attempts, I was able to secure a promotion to Social Care Worker role. This was a huge step in my career journey, and I am keen to continue progressing within the NHS.

Mackenzie Centre is a place where attendees can truly be themselves. The environment is always filled with fun, laughter, and care. We are a hardworking team and each other’s biggest supporters—we are like one big family, helping one another to achieve our goals.
