While campaigning on the doorstep here in South Scotland region, a surprisingly common response encountered is this: “Yes I support your polices, but I need to vote for [a party or candidate whose policies/views I do not support] in order to keep [another party or candidate whose policies/views I do not support] out."

Under the modified d’Hondt formula, a small party can potentially win a Scottish Parliament regional-list seat with as little as 5–6% of the regional list vote. And even if that is not achieved, other parties take note of the views being expressed. So why not just vote for what you believe in?
