Marchmont House

Marchmont House Official page of Marchmont House, Greenlaw, Berwickshire

Long thought to have been designed by William Adam, it is possibly the work of the celebrated architect James Gibbs, and enacted by Thomas Gibson. Major changes were made between 1914 and 1917 by the eminent Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer, and it stands today as perhaps the finest example of his ‘grand’ house refurbishments. Situated at the heart of the Marchmont Estate, it lies to the east

of the village of Greenlaw in the Scottish Borders, 19 miles west of Berwick-upon-Tweed and just 40 miles from Edinburgh.

After a sell-out debut performance at Marchmont in 2024, we are delighted to welcome St Salvator’s Chapel Choir back to Marchmont on 29th June to sing in Marchmont’s majestic oak-panelled Music Room, designed by Sir Robert Lorimer.

St. Salvator’s Chapel Choir is the flagship choir of the University of St Andrews. A mixed-voice ensemble of around twenty-five students, the choir’s history extends back to the founding of the University in the early fifteenth century, when students were obliged to sing in the University’s chapel. These choristers were referred to as the ‘Choristi Sanctiandree’.

The concert will be the first in our four-part Music at Marchmont 2025 series, led by Marchmont’s Musical Director Simon Leach.

Doors will open at 15:00 for pre-concert tea and coffee, and home baked goods, which are included in the ticket price. The concert will start at 16:15 and finish at 17:30, without an interval.

The programme includes a mixture of fine sacred and secular unaccompanied choral music from the Renaissance to the present day such as Howells’ Requiem, and a selection of Scottish folk-songs.

It was a pleasure to welcome Charlotte Lorimer today who had booked onto a House Tour.

Charlotte is the great-granddaughter of the eminent Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer who was responsible for the ‘aggrandisement’ of Marchmont in the early 20th Century for the McEwen family.

Creator of the spectacular Music Room, just one of his numerous additions to the House, Lorimer delighted in the ‘dawn chorus’ or as he referred to it ‘The Birds’ Morning Hymn’. He was particularly keen on the song of the Blackbird, and they are a recurring motif at Marchmont as seen here on the main staircase he designed.

He shared his passion in a letter to the Times in 1929 “…if any readers of The Times who are interested, and who happen to live or spend their weekends near some bird-haunted spinney, can contrive — once in a way — to wake up at half-past 4, I strongly urge them to wrap up in warm dressing-gowns, stand at their open window for five minutes, and they will be rewarded. Their beds will feel the warmer, their subsequent dreams will be the sweeter, for the rare experience.”

We are delighted to be able to welcome Sophie Yates to Marchmont. The doyenne of the harpsichord, she will play our Flemish style that was hand-built by Andrew Garlick who will also be in attendance.

Sophie, best known for her affinity with English and French music, will play a variety of pieces to fully exploit the range of this often overlooked instrument.

Tickets are available now, including a combined House Tour and Concert ticket with tea, and an option to stay overnight. Come to hear (and see) the artistry for yourself: https://www.marchmonthouse.com/events/sophie-yates-harpsichord-recital
