🛟 Drowning Prevention Week - Know the Water Safety Code 🛟

Today marks the beginning of Drowning Prevention Week, and we're encouraging everyone to learn the Royal Life Saving Society UK's Water Safety Code.

Whether you're visiting the beach, a lake, river or swimming pool this summer, these simple steps could help save a life:

🧠 Stop and Think
Take a moment to look for potential dangers and make safe choices before entering the water.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Stay Together
Always stay close to friends and family around water. Never swim alone.

📞 Call 999 in an Emergency
If someone is in trouble, call 999 immediately. If you're at the coast, ask for the Coastguard.

💙 Float if You Get into Trouble
If you find yourself struggling in the water, float on your back, keep calm and control your breathing until help arrives or you can swim to safety.

By learning and sharing the Water Safety Code, we can all help prevent drowning and enjoy the water safely this summer.

We know that speeding continues to be a concern for many residents. While the police carry out speed monitoring where possible, operational demands mean they are not always able to be present.

The Police are currently looking for local volunteers to support a Community Speed Watch scheme.

Community Speed Watch gives residents the opportunity to work alongside the police to help monitor vehicle speeds, raise awareness of road safety issues and encourage safer driving within the community.

They are looking for people who:
• Care about road safety
• Can spare a little time on an occasional basis
• Want to make a positive difference in their community

Full training and equipment will be provided.

If you are interested in taking part, or would like more information, please contact the Police via the In The Know page.

Want to avoid:

- 6 points on your licence (even if you don’t have one yet)
- A £300 fine
- Your e-scooter being seized and crushed!

❌Don’t use a private e-scooter on public roads or pavements.

There are currently no active rental schemes in County Durham and Darlington for e-scooters. The only way to use them legally is on private land, with the landowner’s permission.

📢 Did you know?

Around 7 in 10 people living with dementia may go missing at least once.

Last year Durham Constabulary launched a new initiative; the “Dementia Wristband’.

When an individual is signed up to our Herbert Protocol, they will be offered a wristband or hangtag. These are programmed to hold the individuals next of kin name and contact number, so in the event that they go missing and are located, we are able to return them home as soon as possible.

Officers are asking anyone who notices someone on their own, looking lost and confused, and wearing one of these bright yellow bands or tags to stop and help.

🗣️ PCSO Nicholas Laverick who is assisting in rolling out and managing the scheme, said: “We know how challenging dementia can be for families. This scheme offers reassurance and helps bring loved one’s home safely as quickly as possible.

“We are encouraging anyone who is hearing about this initiative and has a loved one who could be supported by both the Herbert Protocol and the Dementia Wristband Scheme to contact us, If you have a loved one already on the scheme and feel the additional support of a band or tag would be beneficial, please contact us on the below email.”

To refer a loved one into the Herbert Protocol, or to request a band or tag if already on the protocol, please contact;
