“Patriotism is not enough. It is not enough to love one's own people, one must love all humanity." – Edith Cavell, born on this day in 1865.

As a nurse during the First World War, she saved the lives of soldiers on both sides without discrimination.

She was executed by firing squad in October 1915 after helping 200 allied troops escape German-occupied Belgium.

She spoke the words above on the evening before her ex*****on.

In 1919, Edith Cavell was memorialised on the Durham Miners' Association's Bowburn Lodge banner.
