Redhills Durham

Redhills Durham Redhills Durham has been constituted as a charity to serve as stewards of Redhills Durham Miners’ Hall on behalf of Durham Coalfield communities.

We have a clear mission to harness our living heritage to revitalise our coalfield communities. Durham Miners Hall, known as Redhills, opened in Durham City in 1915. Paid for by two hundred thousand working miners, the hall was a democratic hub and the heart of the Durham Coalfield. From Redhills, collective decisions were made, transforming the cultural and social fabric of County Durham; homes f

or aged miners were commissioned, healthcare for sick and injured miners provided, and welfare halls and reading rooms were built. It provided these services to the people of the coalfield a generation before the national welfare state was established. Redhills is Grade II listed, with its ‘Pitman's Parliament’ named by Historic England as one of its ' 100 irreplaceable places. It is ranked alongside the Palace of Westminster as one of the country's top ten landmarks in England's power, protest and progress history. Redhills is a beacon celebrating a unique heritage of social progress through community enterprise

Today, Redhills was honoured to attend the Easington Pit Disaster Memorial, joining families, communities, and friends in remembering the men who lost their lives in one of Durham Coalfield's most devastating tragedies.

The Easington disaster remains a powerful reminder of the dangers faced by miners and the sacrifices made by generations of working people who built our communities.

We stand in solidarity with the mining communities of County Durham and remain committed to keeping their stories, struggles and achievements alive.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Redhills today for the 75th Anniversary Memorial Event commemorating the Easington and Eppleton pit disasters.

Together we remembered the miners who lost their lives, honoured their families and communities, and reflected on the lasting impact these tragedies had across the Durham Coalfield.

We would like to thank everyone who attended, spoke, performed, took part and helped make the day such a respectful and moving occasion. It was particularly powerful to see so many people come together in solidarity to ensure that these stories and sacrifices continue to be remembered.

We hope this will become an annual event, bringing people together each year to remember those who were lost and to celebrate the resilience of the communities they left behind.

In solidarity.

Join us at Redhills Durham Miners Hall on Friday 29 May for a special act of remembrance marking the 75th anniversary of the Easington and Eppleton Colliery disasters.

In 1951, County Durham was shaken by two devastating mining disasters within weeks of each other. On 29 May, an underground explosion at Easington Colliery claimed the lives of 83 miners and rescue workers, leaving families and communities across the East Durham coalfield grieving. On 6 July, a further explosion at Eppleton Colliery, near Hetton-le-Hole, took the lives of nine miners.

Together, these tragedies left a deep and lasting mark on the Durham coalfield. They remain among the most painful chapters in the region’s industrial history, remembered by many as part of the “Year of Tragedy”.

The memorial will take place at Redhills from 11.30am, with the act of remembrance beginning at 11.45am in the Redhills Memorial Garden. The ceremony will include speeches, prayers, a roll call of the dead, and a performance of Gresford – The Miners’ Hymn.

Refreshments will follow in the new Banner Room at Redhills.

All are welcome to attend.

Mark Thomas: 40 in Stand-Up Years
Thursday 17th September, 7.30pm

What?! Mark Thomas has been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic.

So, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years, won 8 awards for performing, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4), written 6 books and 5 play scripts, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4, sued the police (and won) 3 times, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours.

If that’s not enough, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. You’re right, there’s more, but your attention is running out and we’re running out of space. So let’s just say he’s generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset the right people…which he is really, really good at.
