Deliberate fire setting can have serious consequences that burn on long after the flames have gone out. πŸ”₯

During the warm weather and school holidays, our firefighters typically see a rise in the number of arson incidents.

In April, May and June last year, 92% of the fires that crews in Bishop Auckland attended were deliberate.πŸš’

People might think that setting fire to a bin or bit of grass is just a bit of fun but we want to stress that not only are they putting themselves and others at risk of injury, but they could also be preventing crews from being available to attend critical incidents like house fires, road traffic collisions and water related incidents.

Arson is a crime that can result in prosecution and may have lasting implications for future education and employment opportunities. πŸš“

Please talk to your children children about the dangers of setting deliberate fires.

We are carrying out regular patrols of hotspot areas in Bishop Auckland with Durham Constabulary to deter further incidents.

Anyone with information on deliberate fires in their area can report it anonymously via the FireStoppers website or by calling 0800 169 5558.

Knowing what to do if you see someone in trouble in the water could save their life.

Remember: 'Phone, Float, Throw.'

πŸš’ PHONE 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service. You can use the β€˜what3words’ app to identify your location.

πŸš’ Tell the person in the water to FLOAT on their back with their ears under the water and to use their hands to stay afloat.

πŸš’ THROW rescue equipment, such as a life ring, to help them float.

Never enter the water to help a person or a pet in distress.

Our firefighters are urging the public not to take risks near the water as the hot and sunny weather looks set to continue this week.

The water can be extremely cold, even on the hottest of days, and jumping in could cause Cold Water Shock which affects your breathing and movement.

πŸ§‘β€πŸš’ If you do find yourself in difficulty in the water, float on your back.
πŸ§‘β€πŸš’ If you see someone in difficulty in the water, PHONE 999 and ask for the fire service. Tell the person in the water to FLOAT on their back and THROW them something that floats such as a throw bag, if nearby. (Remember: PHONE, FLOAT, THROW.)

National BBQ Week falling on a sunny Bank Holiday Monday, may seem like too good an excuse to fire up that grill.

But our firefighters are once again urging you to pack a picnic, not a BBQ, to avoid the risk of wildfires from breaking out in the hot and dry conditions.πŸ”₯

Careless actions like leaving a BBQ to smoulder can cause a large fire that puts lives and property at risk.

And when our firefighters are attending preventable fires, it can impact its ability to respond to other emergencies.

But if you must have a BBQ, please follow these top safety tips:

πŸš’ Never place a BBQ inside or near the opening of a tent or caravan and make sure there is plenty of space around you when cooking.

πŸš’ Never place the BBQ on anything flammable as the foil base gets very hot.

πŸš’ Make sure your disposable BBQ is fully extinguished by pouring plenty of water or sand onto it.

πŸš’ Do not place a disposable BBQ in a rubbish bin until the coals have cooled down completely.

It's set to be another beautiful day!

But if you're planning on enjoying the warm weather by one of our water spots, please make sure you don't risk taking a dip.

The water could be cold enough to cause Cold Water Shock, which can seriously affect your breathing and movement.

Meanwhile currents can overpower even the strongest of swimmers.

There may also be hidden dangers like rocks beneath the surface.

Remember, 'Float to Live' if you do find yourself in trouble in the water.

Float on your back with your ears under the water and use your hands to help stay afloat.

Call for help and try to steer yourself towards the shore.

If you see someone in difficulty, phone 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service, tell the person to float on their back and throw them something that floats.

It may seem like BBQ weather, but careless actions in hot and dry conditions could lead to a wildfire that puts lives and property at risk. β˜€οΈ

Our firefighters work around the clock to keep you safe and want to encourage you to have a picnic, not a BBQ this Bank Holiday Weekend. πŸ§‘β€πŸš’

Help us to prevent devasting wildfires. πŸ™ πŸ§‘β€πŸš’

Careless actions like discarding a cigarette or using a disposable barbecue can have serious consequences in hot and dry conditions, with wildfires spreading rapidly and placing people, property, and wildlife in danger.

We know many of you will be enjoying the sunny weather this Bank Holiday Weekend, but our firefighters would like to urge everyone to please follow this safety advice:

πŸš’ Don't use disposable barbecues in open countryside, parks, and moorland areas.
πŸš’ Don't discard ci******es, matches, or glass bottles, as they can ignite dry vegetation.
πŸš’ If you see a wildfire, call 999 immediately and ask for the fire and rescue service.
πŸš’ Tell the operator the location of the fire, the direction it is spreading, what is burning and if there is anything in immediate danger.
πŸš’ If you notice any suspicious behaviour or see someone intentionally starting a fire, contact the police immediately or report the information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or Firestoppers on 0800 169 5558.

Let’s all work together to keep each other safe. 🧑

The weather for this Bank Holiday weekend is looking scorching! β˜€οΈ

We're all looking forward to finally seeing some sunshine, but please don't put yourself and others at risk.

πŸ§‘β€πŸš’ Our advice is always to pack a picnic, not a BBQ to reduce the chance of wildfires from breaking out during dry spells.

πŸ§‘β€πŸš’But if you are planning on using one, please make sure your disposable BBQ is fully extinguished by pouring plenty of water or sand onto it and don't put it in a bin until the coals are cold.

πŸ§‘β€πŸš’ Don't risk taking a dip in our rivers and water spots, as the water could be cold enough to cause Cold Water Shock and currents can overpower even the strongest of swimmers.

πŸ§‘β€πŸš’Remember, 'Float to Live' if you do find yourself in trouble in the water and 'Phone, Tell, Throw' if you see someone who needs help.

Our staff will be giving up time with their families this Bank Holiday weekend to keep you safe, so please take care out there! 😊
