A brand new after school club for secondary pupils in years 8 and 9 will be launched this Autumn. It brings together university language undergraduates and school pupils who share an enthusiasm and passion for language learning. The six sessions will begin on Thursday 4 November and continue for the following six Thursdays. Each session will be led by university students and delivered using Teams or Zoom....

Four business ambassadors shared their language journeys with over 200 pupils from nine regional secondary schools as part of our regional languages festival. Explaining how they use French, German, Spanish and Italian in a range of industry settings was a powerful message to the region’s learners. We heard how an engineer used his skills both in Germany and in developing pharmaceutical plant development, how a company making hand sanitiser in County Durham needs to liaise with clients across the world and how recycled industrial processing equipment has a world market with clients expecting the supplier to engage with them in their language....

More than 3000 pupils took part in a fantastic range of activities as part of Express Yourself North East, the region's latest festival of languages. Durham University delivered 40 language taster sessions to pupils in Arabic, Catalan, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. We ran Wake it, Shake it in Spanish, a masterclass translation session in French, showed world culture from India and Bolivia, encouraged pupils to take part in an escape room challenge and made crepes....
