A prolific shoplifter has been banned from entering every Sainsbury's store in County Durham, excluded from entering the Gilesgate area, and handed a 46-week prison sentence.

Louise Walker appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court earlier this week charged with multiple counts of shoplifting.

The 45-year-old pleaded guilty to the offences, and imprisonment was deemed the only suitable option. The court also granted a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), banning Walker from every Sainsbury's store in County Durham and prohibiting her from entering the Gilesgate area of Durham.

Sergeant Arneil, from the Sherburn Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "My team has worked tirelessly to repeatedly put Walker before the courts, and we are pleased to see she is finally being put behind bars. We hope this gives some respite to our local businesses.

"We want to reassure businesses that shoplifting is dealt with robustly and will not be tolerated within our communities."

Do you know where your children are tonight?

Framwellgate Moor Neighbourhood Policing Team have moved on over a hundred youths who were causing anti-social behaviour in and around the Arnison Centre, Abbey Leisure Centre and neighbouring housing estates in the Pity Me area. This is becoming a regular occurrence each weekend. Residents and staff working at the Arnison Centre should not have to tolerate this unruly behaviour.

Local officers will be liaising with local schools and Durham County Council’s ASB team to identify those involved. Positive will be taken against those identified.

🫣 More lessons in camouflage needed….

On Tuesday evening, two students called 999 after hearing people breaking into their home in Durham City.

The suspects, described as wearing camouflage clothing and balaclavas, fled the address with an iPad.

The 999 call came into our Control Room at 11.18pm, with officers on scene within two minutes.

Luckily one of the students remembered the iPad’s location settings was turned on so officers were able to direct their area search.

Following a brief foot chase, both suspects were arrested by PCs Bray and Hounslow and off to the cells within seven minutes of the initial call being made.

Both 23-year-old men were arrested on suspicion of burglary and the iPad was returned to its owner.

The 20-year-old is wanted in relation to an investigation into controlling and coercive behaviour and stalking involving fear of violence.

He has links to Durham City, Newcastle, and Berwick-upon-Tweed.

🚜Rural Crime Week

Last week we teamed up with partner forces and agencies to carry out targeted strikes on those who mistakenly think our rural communities are an easy target.

Highlights included:
👊A Ford Mondeo that was suspected to have been involved in burglaries in the Carlisle area and believed to be operating in the Crook area on three different number plates was found hidden in a garage by patrolling PCSOs Robson and Clark. Crook NPT and Response officers subsequently seized the vehicle and arrested two suspects as well as recovering £3k in cash. An investigation is ongoing.
👊A horse box stolen in the Cumbria area was recovered in Sunniside within 24 hours and one man arrested on suspicion of theft. It turns out he was also wanted for he**in drugs offences and a subsequent search of his address uncovered further Class A drugs, a he**in press and suspected stolen power tools.
👊Two trailers, one believed to have been stolen during a burglary in Selkirk and one confirmed stolen from Warrington 17 years ago, were also recovered and dealt with by officers from Barnard Castle NPT.
👊A stolen caravan from the Avon and Somerset area was located in Streetlam, Barnard Castle after officers used the force drone to track it. The rightful owner has been notified and the caravan will be returned.

Teams across the force also took part Operation Checkpoint, which sees officers team up with our Rurali groups to stop suspicious vehicles and individuals, intercepting criminals and even some of our Rurali members, who were happy to be stopped.

Prevention work continued with the launch of our new SelectaDNA scheme at Wolsingham and Stanhope Agricultural Shows.

Other items on offer were safer homes kits, locks, alarms and stop me stickers, supported by the Durham Police and Crime Commissioner. Officers who attended the events all did so on their rest days to support the project.

This work and our commitment to our rural residents continues all-year-round.

👮Officers will also be attending Eggleston Agricultural Show on Saturday, September 19. Please come and say hello. We will be issuing SelectaDNA kits to farm residents across Teesdale, just bring proof of address or utility bill.

🔐 Hire it – lock it – secure it

Our Prevention & Problem-Solving Team and Community Safety Coordinator for Durham City have worked alongside Greenspace, Durham University after the area around the Bill Bryson Library was identified as a hotspot for opportunistic thieves targeting insecure or poorly secured bicycles.

🚲 Staff, students, and visitors can now check out a Gold Secure bike lock from the library using their library card.

The locks have been provided by Durham Constabulary with additional funding for bike marking kits provided by the Police and Crime Commissioner. Durham University has supported the initiative by setting up the QR codes and managing the lock rental process at the library.

Please see our tips for securing your bike:
• Use a good-quality lock. If using a D-lock, secure the frame of the bicycle and try to reduce the space between the lock and the frame.
• Position the lock so that it is elevated and point the keyhole downwards to help prevent water ingress and lock tampering.
• Use a secondary lock, such as a cable lock, to secure your wheels through your main lock.
• Look for well-lit, secure bike parking areas with solid railings.

Neighbourhood officers from Durham City, Crook and Barnard Castle have recently taken part in water rescue training provided by our colleagues at County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service

This is additional specialist training that will also be rolled out to response officers over the coming months.

Money to fund the purchase of the throw ropes has also been provided by Durham University, the Durham Police and Crime Commissioner, and the City of Durham Parish Council.

Throw ropes are a small but vital piece of rescue equipment that will be carried in police vehicles in the Durham City area, allowing our officers the best chance of getting people to safety in an emergency.

If you ever find yourself in danger, remember this key advice:
• 'Float to Live' if you get into trouble in the water.
• If you see someone who needs help, call 999, tell them to float on their back, and throw them something that floats.
• Never go into the water yourself.
