How much water does steam cleaning actually use?

Less than most people assume. The DOFFIII uses an average of 5 litres of water per minute.

That figure matters on older masonry. The concern with pressure washing is not only the force, it is the volume of water being driven into the wall. Saturated brick and stone take a long time to dry out, and trapped moisture causes problems of its own.

The DOFFIII works with superheated water and steam rather than sheer force, so it needs very little water to lift dirt, moss, algae and paint. Lower consumption means faster drying times, less saturation and more protection for delicate stonework.

It is easier on site too. Less run off to manage, and a surface you can inspect properly before deciding what comes next.

Great to see the DOFF system at work across the Atlantic, in the hands of B&B Gravestone Cleaning Service at City Hall in Prince Albert, Canada.

When a 1998 mural on the building could no longer be restored, it needed removing without harming the historic Tyndall stone façade beneath. B&B Gravestone Cleaning Service carried out the work using a DOFF steam cleaning system, chosen specifically because it is a low-pressure, superheated water process.

The heat lifts the failed paint while the low pressure protects the stone underneath, which is exactly what a heritage façade needs. Careful work by B&B, and a good example of the thought that goes into removing a coating as much as applying one.

It is one of the most common things people get wrong. They hear "steam cleaning" and picture a powerful jet blasting away at the stone. In reality, the DOFF system works at low pressure.

The cleaning power comes from heat, not force. Its superheated water reaches up to 150°C at the nozzle, softening and lifting paint, grime and biological growth without driving water into the surface. That is exactly why it is safe on historic and delicate masonry, where high-pressure jet washing would cause real damage.
