** READ TO THE BEAT - IT'S ALMOST HERE! **

It’s almost time to Read to the Beat - this year's Summer Reading Challenge for children aged 4-11 years.

Children who take on the Challenge get a special ‘Read to the Beat’ collector’s folder and then stickers and other special goodies along the way. They'll have to read six books of their choice and visit the library three times during the summer break.

Everyone completing the Challenge gets a medal and a very posh certificate to mark their achievement. Many make it even more memorable by having their certificate presented at school with their friends and classmates.

Sign-ups for Read to the Beat will open at the library on SATURDAY 4th JULY.

We're finding some great ways to inspire your creativity this month. We've just had the second of our creative art sessions for adults, hosted and guided by the wonderful Jacquie Sheffield. This time she taught a painting technique using Brusho, a highly-pigmented powder paint. Some amazing art was produced and - rather amazingly really - we didn’t leave any traces of paint on the carpet! Keep an eye open for other free creative sessions led by Jacquie later in the year.

Our latest mini-exhibition features the lino prints and paintings of local artist DEBBIE HANDSLIP. Do pop in during library opening hours to be inspired by her marvellous work. And look out for Debbie at the upcoming Little Bird Market for an opportunity to buy some of her work.

And if you are inspired to try your hand at something new, we also have a new display - The How To of Art - with lots of books about different art techniques you can try in your own quiet times at home.

We held our first creative art session this week. There was lots of cutting-out, sticking and chatting but this time the activity was for adults. Local artist, Jacquie Sheffield, led the morning and provided us with plenty of resources, inspiration and guidance to produce our collage pictures or cards. Everyone really enjoyed the activity and the range of artwork produced was amazing. Many of us hadn’t done any collage since our schooldays and we will now be saving old magazines and cards for cutting up at home to make future creations.

Many thanks to everyone who came, to Jacquie for creating such a warm, friendly and supportive session and to Easingwold Lions for their funding. If you missed out this time, we have another free art session for adults - GET CREATIVE WITH BRUSHO - on Wednesday 3rd June. See our post on this page for details of how to book your place.
