Everyone’s experience of dementia is different, and everyone will have different needs and abilities.

However, there are some things we can try when it comes to assisting those living with dementia with tasks and activities.

• If someone can’t remember how to do something, offer to show them how to do it. Where possible, do the task with them, not for them.

• If someone is feeling anxious about their ability to carry out tasks or activities, try not to put them under pressure: break down tasks into smaller tasks.

• If someone forgets what you have said, repeat your sentence patiently as if you had not said it before.

We’re here for you if you ever need any support or advice about living with dementia or supporting someone who is. Just call our Dementia Connect Support Line on 0333 150 3456.

A wonderful message from Lynne who has shared her experience of supporting her incredible mum.

Although as dementia progresses, more care and support will be required, those with the condition should always be treated by their family, friends, and community as they were before their diagnosis - with respect and dignity.

You can play an important role in helping those with dementia contribute to everyday life and feel part of their community.

If you notice someone who might need assistance, for example if they look lost or overwhelmed - it is important that first and foremost you see the person as an individual – not just the symptoms of dementia.

By behaving in this way we’re able to help put the person at ease, make the situation less stressful and ensure the person feels respected and valued.

Joanne says she became a Dementia Friend to better understand and support her Gramps, and says the bookcase analogy was a great help in explaining how dementia can affect memory.

Why should we consider the terminology we use when we talk about dementia?

The use of the term ‘sufferer’ to describe someone living with dementia is a common grievance for people. Of course, a person with dementia may identify themselves as suffering with the disease, and that is their right to do so.

The issue comes as many people with dementia find the term derogatory and unnecessary, and therefore using the term to describe all people with dementia is not ideal. We need to move away from defaulting to using the term to describe anyone with dementia.

By using the term ‘person with dementia’ we’re able to see the person first, not the dementia.
