🌿Sundays are made for pottering.

A little weeding in the garden, planting new flowers, rearranging shelves, refreshing a favourite corner, or finding a new home for a treasured ornament. It’s the simple jobs that help us slow down and enjoy the day at a gentler pace.

🐈 Apple, our regular feline visitor, is always finding something to investigate around Standen and seems to have mastered the art of Sunday pottering. 🐾

🪴Whether you’re looking for garden inspiration, ideas for your home, or simply a chance to wander and unwind, Standen is the perfect place to spend a slow Sunday.

Come and discover the beauty in the little things.

Did you know our charcoal starts its journey in the woodland? 🌳➡️🔥

Made from sustainably coppiced Sweet Chestnut, by our woodland volunteers, our charcoal is the product of a centuries-old practice that helps woodlands thrive. Every 12–20 years, trees are carefully cut during winter and naturally regrow from the stump, creating habitats for wildlife and supporting biodiversity.

The finest timber becomes fencing, and the rest is turned into high-quality charcoal – nothing wasted, everything valued.

Good for your barbecue. Better for the woodland. 🌿

💚You can purchase our charcoal from visitor reception 🙏

🌞🌧️Dramatic weather often brings dramatic light, and it certainly helped these terrace borders shine in James’ photos from a recent day in the garden.

💚 As part of our ongoing efforts to create a more sustainable landscape, the terrace beds are gradually being replanted with more drought-tolerant species that can thrive with less water. The results are already bringing vibrant colour, supporting wildlife, and helping to reduce the need for watering during drier periods.

Small changes in planting choices can make a big difference, creating gardens that are more resilient to our changing climate while remaining beautiful throughout the seasons.

This , we’re celebrating the steps we’re taking at Standen to care for the garden sustainably, now and for the future. 🌿🌸

💚Standen is now benefiting from its new Pellet Biomass heating system. Gemma, a renewable energy project manager for the National Trust, talks us through.

♻️This renewable programme seeks to reduce carbon and remove fossil fuels from our special sites.

*Saving 60 tonnes of carbon per year and contributing towards the trusts carbon reduction targets.
*Removing 27,000 litres of oil from Standen each year, and the environmental risks this pose to the local environment should there be a spill. This removes all fossil fuels from Standen.
*The pellet will be sourced from the UK waste timber industry.

These projects prove that you can retrofit renewables into listed buildings provided that you are sympathetic in the design and respect the historic nature of these buildings.

🙌 We look forward to welcoming you into Standen House this year in the knowledge that we are using renewable heat ♨️

Celebrating World Environment Day in Standen Kitchen Garden 🌿
We are growing sustainably with our no-dig beds, protecting soil health and boosting biodiversity.

Crops, like our fresh rhubarb from the garden is making its way into our delicious flapjacks at the Barn Café.
We’re planting wildflowers to support bees, butterflies and other vital pollinators, and using comfrey and nettles to create natural fertilisers that nourish our crops without chemicals.
Working with nature, for a greener future. 🌎💚

🔍Look beyond the billiard table in Standen’s Billiard Room and you’ll discover a remarkable collection of framed ceramic tiles by William De Morgan. Created during his Chelsea period (c. 1872–1882), these designs draw inspiration from Persian Iznik ceramics, combining rich colours, intricate patterns, and De Morgan’s unmistakable creativity.

🖼️ Displayed as artworks rather than architectural features, the tiles offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship and artistic innovation that made De Morgan one of the leading figures of the Arts and Crafts movement.

These form part of a wider collection of De Morgan, so do ask our Room Volunteers to point you in the direction of more.

Interested in the Arts and Crafts period and perhaps interested in volunteering? A chance to broaden your knowledge and make new friends.

📆We currently have openings for volunteers, get in touch or pop into our open session this Friday 11-1pm free entry for non members if you are interested.
