Imago Dei

Imago Dei We are committed to equipping women in prison to unlock and live in their God given potential and identity, to live their preferred futures.

At the heart of Imago Dei Prison Ministry is the desire to see women live out their identity and purpose. We believe that no one should be defined by their past or even their circumstances. God created mankind in his image and gave each of us unique gifts, talents, skills and purpose. There are many circumstances and contributing factors as to why people find themselves in prison. By helping to ad

dress these issues during the time spent in custody we believe we are offering real practical solutions and helping prisoners to become healed and whole ready for their release. We want to equip and empower people to live out their potential and not to be defined by their past. This in turn has a knock-on effect on society; community, and family-life, particularly in helping to reduce the re-offending rate.

Out of all the questions bombarding women leaving prison - the most prominent one may be "What's Next?"

After such a period of time inside with people telling you what to do, or where to go - be it for a long sentence or a short one; - it can be daunting to suddenly find yourself on your own, standing free but facing a future of unknowns.

There are services available to meet such needs, with many organisations working with the same vision - to see women leaving prison supported to healthily integrate back into society, reducing the rate of re-offending and lowering homelessness among prison leavers.

The Conference is an event to celebrate and hear from these organisations. Network and learn how we can work together for the best outcome for women needing support upon their release from prison. And hear more from the courageous women who have walked this path and flourished.

To the unseen heroes - WE SEE YOU!

Every week/day/month you show up. Countless number of women lives have changed because you left an impact on them. Maybe it was just a word, or a smile. Or the way they saw you consistently there. Maybe you will never know the impact - but we know it makes a difference.

TO OUR VOLUNTEERS, THANK YOU!

To the women coming into prison to help and enable us to deliver the many courses we offer, thank you!
To those who patiently sort through piles of clothes donations, or man the till in the Shop, thank you!
To those who generously offer their time and expertise in assisting with admin tasks, thank you!
To those who volunteer when we need to man a stall, or need all hands on deck to package hundreds of Christmas/Easter/Encouragement gifts for the women in prison, thank you!
And to those who do not fit into one of the above, and yet continue to support the work of Imago Dei, thank you! We couldn't do this without you all!

A shocking 59% of women left prison in the UK in 2024-2025, without settled accommodation.

Many women are imprisoned far from their families, and are often unable to return to their home areas for various reasons. This leaves them with the only option to start building a life from scratch in a place where they have no connections, and sometimes very little means.

Our first Grace House has just opened in Maidstone, where we aim to model what safe and supported accommodation can look like for women in such a position, as they grapple with 'What's Next?'

Yesterday, may have marked the end of , but here at Imago Dei we continue to share and raise awareness of some of the many ways mental health impacts the women we work with in prison.

While sometimes circumstances seem too big to change, we can still make a difference on the ground - one conversation at a time, one phone-call to check-in with a woman newly released and see how she is doing, one resident learning how to cook a meal at Grace House, organising a job interview for their first job out of prison..... It all matters!

Our latest BLOG post is NOW LIVE and addresses the need to belong. It focuses on women newly released from prison, highlighting the need for somewhere like Grace House for so many women.

Leaving prison can be overwhelming and can oftentimes feel very lonely. We all need a support network in life. People who look out for us, encourage us along the way, and offer a helping hand when needed.

Well done! - You have made it through your prison sentence and now we can celebrate your release and return into society. πŸ‘πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³ This is a huge achievement, and should in no way be underestimated...

Yet so many people stop there.

THAT IS NOT THE END. In many ways it is only the beginning of what, for many women leaving prison, have found to be an intense and difficult, up-hill battle. With many questions still unanswered, regarding housing, employment, family, survival..., there is much anxiety and stress for so many because of the unknown.
