I am calling for an immediate pause to the parking charges in North Berwick following concerns raised by local traders and residents. Parking meters in North Berwick have been live not even one week and we are already seeing significant impact.

Early reports of decreased footfall, congestion at the GP surgery and confusion around signage are yet more proof of how poorly thought through the charges are.

Local businesses cannot afford to wait until 2027 to understand the impact of these charges.

After meeting with local businesses, I am urging East Lothian Council to pause the scheme and engage with traders and the community to review its impact, particularly on business viability and visitor access. I have requested a meeting within the next week to discuss how impacts are being assessed and how the system can be simplified.

I am extremely disappointed and unequivocally condemn the graffiti found in Dunbar yesterday morning. The message conveyed is not a legitimate expression of concern, it is the white supremacist language and tactics of the far right, seeking to sow division in our communities.

There is no place in Scotland for hate-driven messaging, intimidation, or attempts to rewrite grief into political grievance. Defacing a public space in this way is both cowardly and harmful, and it stands in direct opposition to the values of solidarity, respect and decency that define our country.

Communities like Dunbar are stronger than this. We will not allow far-right voices to hijack public discourse, to exploit a tragedy or to pit neighbour against neighbour. Those responsible should be identified and held accountable.

Henry Nowak’s family’s lost their son and brother in the most brutal fashion. Their wish was for his death not to be used to create further division, hatred or tension. We should all honour that wish.

I am beyond devastated to see that wish ignored in the town that I grew up in and love so dearly. I hope whoever is responsible is utterly ashamed of themselves.

My sincere condolences and prayers are with Henry’s loved ones.
