This morning, shipmates from the Royal Naval Association - Eastbourne Branch, pictured along with Eastbourne Deputy Mayor Councillor Teri Sayers-Cooper, thoroughly enjoyed a VIP tour around the Nao Santa Maria, berthed in Eastbourne Sovereign Harbour.

The Nao Santa Maria is an exact replica of the legendary 15th Century vessel of the same name on which Christopher Columbus sailed, in 1492, to discover America. Of course initially, Columbus thought he had found a new route to India, which he was looking for.

The vessels home and build port is Huelva in Spain, the same port from which Columbus set sail all those centuries ago, along with the Nina and Pinta. Well, not exactly, he actually sailed from Palos de la Frontera, a port 15 minutes up the estuary from Huelva.

Either way, the Spanish vessel brought the sun and everyone enjoyed a great history lesson. You may have thought you had it tough on your own early Naval vessels but nothing compared to life endured onboard this vessel in 1492. 😁

Congratulations to Royal Naval Association - Eastbourne Branch on winning the Sherwood Memorial Sword for the branch with most donations as a percentage of its membership. Our chairman S/ms Mal Chumbley received the award, on behalf of the branch, from RNA Vice President Commodore Mark Slawson OBE.

During our meeting on Thursday we were very pleased to be able to present our Shipmates, Ken and Rosemary Parker with a small gift to celebrate their recent 64th wedding anniversary. 🥂

Ken has the honour that his father, was the most famous "oldest naval AB" in the Royal Navy, Able Seaman William "George" Parker, BEM. George joined up at the age of 16 in 1916 and served 43 years retiring as an AB. By all accounts George, who served in both the 1st and 2nd WW drew over 300 gallons of Rum during his service. Not all at once I should add. 🥃

A great buffet lunch get together, last Sunday for some of our shipmates, overlooking the very sunny Sovereign Harbour Marina. Good food, drink and company. Thanks to S/m Keith for the recommendation, and, as always to S/m Jenny for organising.
