NEW: Family demands firing of Mundelein officer who fatally shot woman during mental health crisis
Officers responded to a 911 call from family members who said 37-year-old Mary Alice Love was threatening self harm and demanded the police to end her.
Officers were led the back door of Love’s mother house where she sat on the back patio with two large knife’s.
As Love’s mother refused to move from the scene, Love stood up and moved toward officers inside the home, a sergeant opened fire, fatally striking her.
Love’s family has strongly criticized the response, arguing that de-escalation tactics or locking the glass door could have prevented her death.
They are now demanding the officer’s immediate termination.
The sergeant has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
