Bilingual Post - English below

Mae'r ffotograff hwn, a dynnwyd ym mis Mehefin 1977, yn dangos Leo Abse yn dadorchuddio carreg yn cofnodi adeiladu Llys Sirhywi yng Nghwmbrân. Ar y pryd, ef oedd AS dros Bont-y-pŵl ac yn ddiweddarach dros Dorfaen (1958 – 1983). Yn ystod ei gyfnod fel AS, roedd Leo Abse yn ddiwygiwr cymdeithasol blaenllaw, yn ymgyrchu dros newidiadau yn y gyfraith i wrywgydiaeth ac ysgariad. Hyrwyddodd argymhellion adroddiad Wolfenden 1957 i gyfreithloni gwrywgydiaeth rhwng oedolion sy’n cydsynio, ac yn y pen draw llwyddodd pan gymeradwywyd Deddf Troseddau Rhywiol 1967.

~~~~~
This photograph, taken in June 1977, shows Leo Abse unveiling a stone recording the building of Sirhowy Court at Cwmbran. At the time, he was MP for Pontypool and later for Torfaen (1958 – 1983). During his time as MP, Leo Abse was a leading social reformer – campaigning for changes in the law regarding homosexuality and divorce. He promoted the 1957 Wolfenden report’s recommendations to legalise homosexuality between consenting adults and eventually succeeded with the passing of the Sexual Offences Act 1967.
Heddiw mae’n Ddiwrnod Ffotograffiaeth Natur, ac roeddem am dynnu sylw at lyfr lloffion yn ein casgliad sy'n cynnwys ffotograffau’n dogfennu digwyddiad glanhau'r ardal tipio anghyfreithlon llethol yng Nghasnewydd. Ar ôl digwyddiad cymunedol i gasglu sbwriel a ffurfio grŵp cymunedol newydd, nod Prosiect Peillwyr Casnewydd oedd gwella cynefinoedd a bioamrywiaeth yn yr ardal. Aeth Tom Maloney ati i ddogfennu’r prosiect cyn adneuo’r llyfr lloffion hwn i'r archifau.
Today is Nature Photography Day and we wanted to highlight a scrapbook in our collection which includes photographs documenting the major clean up of the mass fly tipping area in Newport. After a community litter picking event and a newly formed community group, the Newport Pollinator Project aimed to improve habitat and biodiversity in the area. The project was documented by Tom Maloney who then deposited this scrapbook to the archives.
Mae’n Wythnos Ryngwladol Archifau yr wythnos hon, a’r thema eleni yw , y mae ei ffocws penodol ar hawliau, atgofion a dyfodol. Mae cadw atgofion trwy dystiolaeth bersonol fel dyddiaduron yn un ffordd y mae archifau yn cefnogi cyfiawnder.
Ganed Preifat Charles Parkinson Heare (1891 – 1985) yn Nhref Gruffydd, ger Pont-y-pŵl. Ef oedd yr hynaf o chwe phlentyn. Ymunodd Heare ag Ail Fataliwn Llu Tiriogaethol Catrawd Sir Fynwy ym 1913 a chychwyn am Ffrainc ar 5 Tachwedd 1914. Treuliodd y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf fel trefnydd, o dan y 4ydd a'r 29ain Adran.
Mae dyddiadur Heare gennym ni yma, yn Archifau Gwent. Er gwaethaf cael ei alw'n ddyddiadur, mae'n debygol iddo ei ysgrifennu rywbryd ar ôl diwedd y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf. Mae'r casgliad yn cynnwys nifer o lythyrau a ffotograffau – yn cynnwys llun o Heare yn cwrdd â'r Brenin Edward VIII ym Mhont-y-pŵl ym 1936.
This week is International Archives Week and this year’s theme is with particular focus on rights, memory and futures. Preserving memories through personal testimonies such as diaries is just one way archives support justice.
Private Charles Parkinson Heare (1891 – 1985) was born in Griffithstown, near Pontypool, and was the eldest of six children. Heare joined the Second Battalion of the Monmouthshire Regiment Territorial Force in 1913 and embarked for France on 5th November 1914. He spent the First World War as an orderly, under the 4th and 29th Divisions.
Here at Gwent Archives we hold Heare’s diary. Despite being called a diary, it is likely that he wrote it sometime after the end of the First World War. The collection includes a number of letters and photographs – including one of Heare meeting King Edward VIII at Pontypool in 1936.
