Mae 30 Medi yn Ddiwrnod Cenedlaethol Treftadaeth Chwaraeon. Er mwyn dathlu, byddwn yn postio'n ddyddiol trwy gydol mis Medi gan dynnu sylw at eitemau o gasgliad Clwb Athletau Casnewydd. Mae ein tîm wedi bod yn gweithio'n galed ar y casgliad hwn, a ddaeth i Archifau Gwent am y tro cyntaf yn 2016, ac mae'r casgliad yn llawn eitemau diddorol, pwysig a theimladwy.

The 30th September is National Sporting Heritage Day. To celebrate, we will be posting daily throughout September highlighting items from the Newport Athletic Club collection. Our team has been working hard on this collection, which first came to Gwent Archives in 2016, and the collection is full of interesting, important and poignant items.

Yr ail eitem o gasgliad Rolls yr oeddem am dynnu sylw atynt yw’r dyddiadur teithio hwn sy’n dogfennu teithiau'r teulu. Dyma ddyddiadur Edward Nevill Macready a deithiodd yn India, Seilón a'r Aifft gyda'i wraig, Martha S. Rolls, rhwng 1820 a 1848. Mae'r dyddiadur penodol hwn yn dogfennu'r daith adref o Seilón trwy'r Aifft ym 1839 ac mae’n cynnwys nodyn dyddiol am y tywydd!

~~~
The second item from the Rolls collection we wanted to highlight which documents the family’s travels is this travel journal. This is the journal of Edward Nevill Macready who travelled in India, Ceylon and Egypt with his wife, Martha S. Rolls, on various trips between 1820 and 1848. This particular journal documents the trip home from Ceylon via Egypt in 1839 including a note on the daily weather!
Gan fod gwyliau’r haf ar eu hanterth ac mae pobl yn mynd ar eu gwyliau, dyma ddyddiadur y daethom o hyd iddo yn un o’n casgliadau eglwysi plwyf, ac a ysgrifennwyd gan y Parchedig L.W Williams, ficer Trecelyn, ar long S.S Paddington. O Fehefin tan Awst 1902, hwyliodd o Gasnewydd ar draws Môr y Canoldir a’r Môr Du, gan fynd heibio i Fae Gwasgwyn, Gibraltar, Mynydd Etna, ac ymweld â Chaer Gystennin ac Odessa
Ni un gwbl lefn oedd y daith serch hynny, cwynodd am gyfreithiau sigarennau’r Eidal, aeth cyd-deithiwr yn ddifrifol sâl ar y môr, a chafodd drafferth cael brecwast tra’r roedd yn aros mewn gwesty yn ninas Braila, yn Romania- "Rhoddais dro ar bob ffordd posibl o roi gwybod i’r gweinydd fy mod eisiau ham ac wyau, dangosodd daten i mi. Es i yn ôl i fy ystafell, wedi fy ffieiddio."
As the summer holidays are in full swing and people are off on their travels, here’s a diary we found in one of our parish church collections written by Reverend L.W Williams vicar of Newbridge, on board the S.S Paddington. From June to August 1902, he sailed from Newport across the Mediterranean and Black Sea, passing the Bay of Biscay, Gibraltar, Mount Etna, and visiting Constantinople and Odessa
It wasn’t all plain sailing though, he complained about Italian cigarette laws, a fellow passenger is badly sea sick, and he has issues with ordering breakfast while staying in a hotel in Braila in Romania- "I tried every way I possibly could to let a waiter know I wished to have ham and eggs, he showed me a potato. I went back to my room disgusted."
