Keep an eye out for the glossy leaves and bright red berries of Cowberry on the moors.

In late summer, cowberry adds a splash of eye-catching red-and-green amongst the other colourful moorland plants.

It’s vegetation survey time when we have a look at what’s happening on the moors. Vegetation gives us a huge amount of information about the condition of moorland.

We use on-the-ground vegetation surveys to understand what type of vegetation is growing, the condition of the habitat and how it is changing. Each plant species has its own place and its presence tells us about the conditions there. By monitoring the vegetation, we can recognise when conditions change, and link the changes we see to the work we have done.

Healthy peatland habitats are covered in a diverse community of specialist plants which in turn support a range of animals along with providing many other benefits.

Thirty-eight people (staff and volunteers) will be involved in this year’s vegetation survey campaign. Between now and December, we will be visiting sixteen sites all totalling around 75-100 person-days.
