One lucky survivor. This lizard was spotted after last week’s wildfire on Snake Summit. Sadly, its home and habitat is now badly damaged. Please don’t light BBQs, campfires or ci******es on the moors. Give lizards and other moorland species a chance to have a safe and green future by protecting our peatlands.

Rather be out on the hills today? Let us take you on a quick tour of Bleaklow. Here, if you look closely, you may spot some of our restoration interventions. You can see we take a layered approach to reducing erosion and helping nature recover. How many of these methods had you heard of?

The moors are beautiful but fragile … life is blossoming out there (as we can see from this spectacular cotton grass), and moorland birds are laying their eggs on the ground. We all need to do our bit to protect this precious landscape, so no fires or barbecues on the moors please, and keep dogs on a short lead.

Sir David Attenborough is an inspiration to everyone in the world of conservation, and we wanted to join in with celebrating his life and contribution to caring for our environment on this, his 100th birthday. 10 years ago, we were honoured to receive this message of support for our Community Science Project.

Under the Severn Trent-funded Moor Water project, our Science & Monitoring team, conducted vegetation monitoring to assess the survival and growth of Sphagnum plugs after planting, and progress being made towards achieving Favourable Condition for blanket bog. Favourable Condition in blanket bog is defined by Natural England as when ‘the specific structure and functions which are necessary for its long-term maintenance exist and are likely to continue to exist for the foreseeable future; and only be subject to management interventions where they are necessary to restore functional hydrology or reintroduce key species’.

Moors for the Future Partnership’s research showed that inoculation with Sphagnum plugs at a series of Peak District locations has generally been successful in terms of survival rate a few years after planting, but has unsurprisingly seen mixed results in terms of growth rates – likely to be related to the differing starting conditions of each site.

One year on from the devastating moorland fire in the Goyt Valley, near Buxton in Derbyshire, we’re proud to launch a brand new documentary, After the Smoke Clears, highlighting the impact of the fire on local communities.

The documentary showcases the voices of communities affected by the 2025 moorland fire, which burned over 1.7 square kilometres of moorland for two days. The moorland features as the main subject, showing the damage caused by the fire and conservation efforts to help the moor’s wildlife recover, carried out by local volunteers and businesses, amongst other organisations.

The documentary was filmed in the months leading up to the one-year anniversary of the fire, and is being released on the anniversary of the fire as a reminder of the importance of protecting the moors. The film can be viewed on Moors for the Future Partnership’s YouTube channel now.
