If you're thinking about becoming a foster carer, you're likely to have plenty of questions. That's why we're sharing answers to some of the most common questions our Fosterline advisers receive. šŸ’”

Q: I’m a newly approved foster carer and have birth/adopted children. How can I support my children when a foster child moves on?

A: Saying goodbye to a foster child can be emotional for everyone involved. Whatever the reason for a child moving on, it's important to prepare, communicate openly and make space for everyone to share their feelings.

Foster carers should seek support from their fostering team, family and friends, while also prioritising self-care. To help your own children understand the transition, acknowledge their emotions and encourage empathy for the foster child. Keep children informed in an age-appropriate way, create lasting memories through photos or memory books where appropriate, and discuss future contact with social workers if it is in the child's best interests.

If you have any questions about how best to support your children, our advisers are more than happy to help. Find the contact details here šŸ‘‡

Q: I'm looking after my daughter's friend as her parents can't care for her at the moment, but I'm struggling to make ends meet. Is there any support available?

A: If you're caring for a child who isn't an immediate family member for 28 days or more, this may be classed as a private fostering arrangement. Your local authority must be told so they can check the arrangement is safe and suitable.

In most private fostering arrangements, the child's birth parent or legal guardian remains financially responsible. However, depending on the child's and your family's circumstances, the local authority may be able to provide support or carry out a child in need assessment. You may also be able to access benefits or other financial help.

If the child is looked after by the local authority, they may instead be assessed to live with you as a connected person or kinship foster carer, which could include a fostering allowance.

Q: As a prospective foster carer, how can I ensure my children are included in our fostering journey?

A: Foster carers' children are an important part of the fostering family and are considered throughout the assessment, approval and matching processes.

To help your children feel included:

• Talk openly about fostering and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings.

• Provide reassurance if they feel anxious about a foster child joining the household.

• Share information in an age-appropriate way while respecting the foster child's privacy.

• Make time for one-to-one support and regular family discussions.

• Explain any differences in rules or routines to avoid misunderstandings.

• Explore additional support, such as groups or activities for children in fostering families.

• Involve them in welcoming a foster child by preparing a bedroom, choosing a welcome gift or showing them around the home.

Regular conversations can help children understand the needs of a child in care, build positive relationships, and ensure everyone feels valued and included throughout the fostering journey.
