Happy Mobile Libraries Day to all of our readers and service users, but especially to this cheeky cat who always comes to say hello when we visit this assisted living complex. Even though you refuse to get a library card, break into our van, and walk all over our laptops, we love seeing you as much as our well-behaved human visitors!

Following the torrential rain on Saturday, we got bogged down in the mud trying to leave the park after the Ratho Children's Gala with Ratho Library.

Can laugh at it now, but was very embarrassing at the time. Was within ten feet of the gate and just slowed down too much, as was trying to get the angle lined up right.

Thanks very much to the who did their good deed for the day and pushed us out.

Hello, here is the second post from our friends working on Pokkari, in the iisalmi region in Finland.

"iisalmi Libraries are linked with Edinburgh Libraries through the NAPLES Sister Libraries scheme, and through this connection, we share working practices, ideas, and culture. My colleague Tuomas and I work at Pokkari, our mobile library, and we thought we would share information and experiences about our work.

While driving the routes through the villages of iisalmi, it is pleasant to observe the changing seasons and how nature transforms. For example, this year, in my opinion, winter transitioned to spring earlier and faster than normal. Rivers and lakes flooded the fields less than in previous years and the snow practically evaporated into the air, and there may have also been less snow overall.

The fact that spring arrived quickly is a good thing for mobile library work. The driver must always be aware of what is happening in nature and with the weather. For example, in the transition periods of autumn and spring, problems may arise because the snow by the roadside may melt onto the road and then freeze again. This can turn the road into a pathway that resembles an ice rink! Also, when the temperature approaches 0 degrees Celsius, rain can quickly turn into ice, making the road extremely slippery. This can happen very quickly, even within a few hours.

Additionally, the edge of the road may soften and collapse as the weather warms, or it may be hidden under snow. In the picture, you can see what happens when the road is narrow, the edge collapses, and a wide vehicle is coming from the opposite direction. This situation was handled well โ€“ neither the driver nor the vehicle was harmed, and a crane quickly lifted the car back onto the road.
Luckily, there are things that make slippery conditions more manageable. We have good winter tires on the car, which we change well in advance in the fall as the weather gets worse. In the video, you can see how we fill a device called a sand spreader. As the vehicle moves, it spreads sand in front of the wheels, making our daily life much easier if the road hasnโ€™t been sanded. Filling the sand spreader is a bit tricky, and it doesnโ€™t hold much sand, so we try to use it as wisely as possible. We also have a separate sand box in the car, which has saved us from many tricky situations.

In the next update, we could tell you about all the interesting things to see along our routes. I believe the landscapes are a bit different from yours over there.

We wish everyone a pleasant spring in Edinburgh and hope the winds blow warmly. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Here is the first post from our Finnish Friends:

"Greetings from Iisalmi and the mobile library Pokkari!
Iisalmi Libraries are linked with Edinburgh Libraries through the NAPLES Sister Libraries scheme and through this connection, we share working practices, ideas and culture. My colleague Tuomas and I work at Pokkari, our mobibe library, and we thought we would share information and experiences about our work.

Pokkari is 13 years old and it has served us very well Pokkari. means paperback book in Finnish and we always have them with us - suitable for both children and adults. We also carry with us books, magazines, console games, DVD:s, board games, a total of over 3,000 volumes. The car is long enough to fit a lot of material, but not too long to fit through some very tight intersections. Especially in winter, snowdrifts can create big obstacles and a stop that we used to fit well becomes very tight.

In the morning shift we visit schools, daycare centers and childminders. During these visits, we often sit down and read the children a story. Reading brings a nice change to the day and the children really enjoy it. We collaborate with schools and we talk about books in the library car as well as in school classrooms. If necessary, we will deliver book boxes to the classrooms so that the children will have enough to read until the next weekly Pokkariโ€™s visit.

During the evening shift we visit villages in every direction of Iisalmi. Mobile library services are important for many village residents with mobility impairments who have difficulty accessing the main library. Village residents can make book reservations using an app that can be downloaded to their mobile phone, and Pokkari will deliver the reservations to the villages. This way, village residents can also participate in the offerings of our library network.

Because spring is just around the corner, we thought we'd share next what our work is like during different seasons - drivers drive no matter what the weather is. And in spring it's not always easy. But more on that next time."

Hello, we're starting a new Social Media collaboration and conversation with our colleagues from Lisalmi Libraries in Finland, who also run a service.

We will be sharing and posting on each other's pages about our services and working days.

It was lovely to meet them when they popped over for a short visit to Edinburgh City Libraries a few years ago, (and we have to admit, our team is very jealous of Pokkari.

Hello everyone, we are back at Davidson's Mains Parish Church today with the blue bus.

We are parked on the far side of the car park/church hall in the pedestrianised area, so please look for us.

Hello everyone, we are having to curtail today's visit to Davidson's Mains Parish Church early as the heating is not working on the bus, and the weather is bitterly cold.

We will be back tomorrow, but in the meantime please accept our apologies.
