Recently, we had a lovely catch-up with Bruce, Alan and Angela, board members of The Mickel Fund, who popped into Albany Street to hear about the continued great work of the Bedrock project and its long-term support for young people.

The Mickel Fund has been a valued supporter of Rock Trust since 1991. Its founder, Douglas Mickel, purchased three properties in Edinburgh for Rock Trust to use free of charge. These properties continue to provide essential homes for young people today as part of our Bedrock portfolio.

We’re incredibly grateful for the Fund’s longstanding support and the lasting impact it continues to have on the lives of young people.

Supportive Flatmate Opportunity🏠

My Place gives people aged 18–30 the chance to share a home in Musselburgh with two young people in supported accommodation. You’ll offer friendship, stability and around 15 hours of peer support each week as they build their confidence and independence.

In return, you’ll receive:

- Free rent and Wi-Fi
- Full training and ongoing support
- Around £20 per fortnight towards gas and electricity
- The chance to make a real difference to a young person’s life

Meet Toni, Team Leader for Housing First for Youth in Fife.

Toni has been part of Rock Trust for over five and a half years and now leads our dedicated Housing First for Youth team in Fife.

Housing First for Youth supports young people who have experienced homelessness to access permanent housing alongside flexible, personalised support. We believe that housing is a basic human right and work alongside young people for as long as they need us, helping them build stability, confidence and independence.

Rock Trust was the first charity in Scotland to deliver this innovative support model and now provides Housing First for Youth services across Fife, Glasgow and West Lothian.

"The most rewarding part of my role is seeing young people thrive in their tenancies and grow in confidence as they build independent lives. We have a fantastic team in Fife, and I am incredibly proud of the relationships they build with young people, always going the extra mile to ensure they receive the support they deserve."

New duties in the Housing (Scotland) Act 2025 will require public bodies to ask about someone's housing situation early and act before things escalate - otherwise known as 'Ask & Act'.

How will this look in schools? Our Ask & Act Education Manager Hannah Rawlinson has been speaking to staff across 25 Scottish schools to find out what's needed. Building on our Upstream Scotland programme, we're now developing practical tools to help schools identify and support young people at risk, before they reach crisis point.

From how it started to how it's going 🌱

Over the past few months, we've been busy at our Youth Gardening Club at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh growing potatoes, lettuce, coriander, parsley, beans, courgettes, kohlrabi, sunflowers, rocket, radishes and so much more!

It's been a really valuable experience learning how to grow and harvest food, while getting outdoors, being active and taking in the sun this summer. We have a few sessions left so if you are interested in getting involved please get in touch.

We've had such a lovely time at our Clay Open Studio sessions with Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop this summer. From getting hands-on with ceramics to glazing finished pieces, it's been a great chance for young people to get creative, meet new people and enjoy a welcoming space to learn something new.

We've still got three sessions left this year:
- 25th September
- 13th November
- 4th December

The sessions are open to all young people, so if you'd like to come along, we'd love to see you! Just get in touch with us to register your interest!
