If you’re a GP in Scotland and feeling a bit stuck, stretched, or just unsure about what comes next, there’s a coaching offer that might be worth knowing about.

The NHS Scotland GP Coaching Service, delivered through PSD Scotland, gives GPs a confidential space to pause and properly think things through, whether that’s about staying in practice, changing how you work, or just finding a better balance.

It’s funded by the Scottish Government for GPs working in Scotland and offers up to 7 hours of one-to-one coaching, delivered virtually and arranged around your schedule. There’s no assessment or performance element, it’s simply a supportive space to reflect and explore what matters most to you in your work and career.

People who’ve taken part have said it helped them with things like:
- finding a better work-life balance
- feeling more in control day to day
- working out what their strengths are and how to use them
- improving resilience and coping with pressure
- thinking differently about how to approach the job
- reducing the impact of work on their health

One GP described it as being “on the point of resignation” before joining, and said it helped them step back and rethink both why they were feeling that way and what could change. Another said they would confidently recommend it to colleagues looking to support their wellbeing and professional growth.

Applications are open for the 2026/27 programme, with matching taking place across summer and autumn. Coaching can be used any time up to March 2027.

Sometimes having space to think properly is the thing that makes the difference.

Join our free online learning event, Getting Bereavement Right Every Time.

Date: Thursday 4 June
Time: 9.30 am to 11.30 am
Audience: health and social care staff, including those in non-clinical, admin and other support roles

All health and social care staff are likely to encounter people who are bereaved, or around the time of a person's death, whether they are patients, families, or colleagues.

This session will cover an introduction to grief and bereavement and will aim to help those attending feel more confident in answering questions such as:

• what should I say to someone who tells me they have recently been bereaved?
• are there particular words I should or shouldn’t use?
• what if I say the ‘wrong’ thing?
• is it normal to be upset if someone we know from work dies?

A new type of cell therapy shows promise as the first treatment for advanced liver disease, following results from a clinical trial.

Patients with the condition who were treated with the cell therapy had a significantly lower risk of death or need for a liver transplant after four years compared with those who received standard medical care.

Experts say the treatment offers a potential alternative to liver transplants for those in end-stage liver disease, which is currently the only curative treatment option but limited by donor availability, cost, and suitability for only a small subset of patients.
