The Scottish Association of Landlords (SAL) represents the interests of all landlords and letting agents throughout Scotland.Working with various Holyrood and Westminster government departments, plus Scotland’s local authorities, SAL campaigns for recognition of our interests as a profession. Private landlords are providing an essential service in meeting housing need so we demand that legislation affecting the sector, and its enforcement, must consider our business needs. We provide information, training and advice to our members nationally, and through our local branch network. From Shetland to Stranraer, for landlords letting out one single flat through to agents managing hundreds of properties; you can benefit from membership wherever you operate.

Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP was appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice and Housing in May 2026. She has worked as a parliamentary researcher, a policy and public affairs officer at the Chartered Institute of Housing, and as a media and campaigns officer at the Royal College of Nursing. Ms Somerville was previously an MSP for the Lothians region from 2007 to 2011, and returned to the Scottish Parliament in 2016 as MSP for Dunfermline. She was previously Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science, and was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Social Security and Older People in June 2018. She was Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills until March 2023, when she was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice.

🏡 Congratulations to Parkhill Property Leasing on its continued growth!

The Aberdeen-based letting and property management firm has completed a six-figure acquisition of James and George Collie’s residential leasing division, expanding its managed portfolio by 50% to 900 properties.

The acquisition brings 300 additional properties under Parkhill’s management, strengthens its presence across Aberdeenshire and sees three new colleagues join the team.

With further expansion plans ahead, it's great to see a Scottish letting business continuing to grow.

Amanda, SAL's chair and a strong voice for Scotland’s private rented sector, working to ensure that the experiences and views of landlords and letting agents are heard within Scotland’s wider housing system.

With more than 20 years’ experience in the property industry, Amanda has extensive practical knowledge across residential sales, lettings and property management. As owner of Wardhaugh, a long-established family-owned property business in Angus, she successfully led the agency through significant changes in regulation, market conditions, technology and consumer expectations.

More recently, Amanda sold and transitioned her own agency and has moved into property consultancy, supporting and advising others across the industry.



Amanda will be chairing our letting agent panel at Scottish Letting Day on 4 November.

We're pleased to welcome the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to this year's Scottish Letting Day, where they'll be delivering a practical bystander intervention training session.

Developed with Right To Be, the session introduces the 5 Ds of safe intervention, giving delegates the confidence and tools to respond safely when they witness harassment.

Jemma holds a BSc in Criminology and Psychology and has nearly a decade of experience delivering personal safety and conflict management training with The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the UK's leading personal safety charity and foremost authority on stalking. Founded in 1986 following the disappearance of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh during a routine property viewing, the Trust has delivered training to over one million people and worked with more than 3,000 organisations, including its Stand Up Against Street Harassment bystander training, delivered with L'Oréal Paris and Right To Be, which has trained over 29,000 delegates since 2022.

Separately, the Trust runs the National Stalking Helpline, which has supported more than 100,000 victims since 2010. Jemma brings this expertise to today's session, helping lettings professionals manage risk and stay safer, both at work and in daily life.

Catriona, originally a qualified teacher, started her business career in the hospitality industry, the family business being hotels, bars and restaurants, where she was operations director in what was a large business with over 500 staff and numerous sites in Edinburgh and beyond.

Leaving hospitality in 2004, she started .co.uk in 2006 and has grown the business over the past 20 years, through organic growth and acquisition. Currently managing over 700 properties and with a staff of 14, the ethos is still the same, personal, professional service, provided by an experienced well-trained, qualified team.

🏠 Can you extend the end date on a notice to leave?

A landlord contacted the SAL helpline after their tenants asked for a three-month extension to their notice to leave, which had been issued because the landlord wished to sell the property.

There’s no provision in private residential tenancy legislation to extend the end date, but landlords do have options, including issuing a new notice or delaying tribunal action.

SAL members have unlimited access to our helpline for expert advice on situations like this.

Scotland’s older housing stock presents an ongoing challenge: how do we improve the quality and energy efficiency of homes while keeping them affordable?

SAL charity member Veterans Housing Scotland has highlighted this balance in its latest newsletter.

With more than 620 properties across Scotland, many built during the interwar years and 1950s, the charity is embarking on a 15-year refurbishment programme covering essential repairs, modernisation and energy-efficiency upgrades.

It’s an issue that will be familiar to many landlords managing older properties across Scotland, particularly as expectations around property standards and energy efficiency continue to evolve.
