A proud moment for Fiona Lawrence and our Argyll & Bute Responder services.

Fiona Lawrence, Operations Manager, recently spoke at a European seminar on crisis preparedness in Finland, after presenting at the European Social Network conference earlier this year.

She shared the impact of our Responder service in Argyll and Bute. These specially trained Support Practitioners are there to respond to Telecare alarms, but they often go above and beyond for the people they support.

During Storm Eowyn (2025), the team showed real resilience. They worked closely with local communities, partner agencies and emergency services to keep people safe and well.

As an islander herself, Fiona knows how much rural communities pull together when it matters, so it was great to see that strength shared on a European stage.

Andrew, Gillian and Paul raised 4 key issues with the Minister for Community Care last week.

✅ Valuing our social care workforce, including increasing the adult social care wage and recognising our overseas workers.
✅ Social care’s role in reducing hospital admissions and delayed discharge
✅ Design care services so that they are person-centred and ready for when people need them.
✅ Carr Gomm’s experience supporting people who have lived in institutions or away from home, back to their own home in their community.

Carr Gomm and the people we support are expert voices with solutions to many of the problems that impact people getting the care they need in Scotland. We know what works, what could be better and how. By speaking with the Minister, we hope to ensure that any reform to social care ensures that everyone who needs it can access good quality care.

A big thank you to our Trustees and colleagues who gave up their Saturday to come together for our Board Development Day. 📒

As you can see from the pictures, there was some serious concentration going on! 😄 It was a day of thoughtful conversation about the future of Carr Gomm.

Our Chief Executive, Andrew Thomson, reflected on the principles that must underpin our next strategic plan:

“We agreed together that we cannot compromise on our person-centred approach, that we must nurture our culture and make values-based choices, and that we must maximise our influence and impact by filling the gaps in society, pushing boundaries, and sharing our wisdom.”

Wednesday means one thing for our Forth Valley Walking Group - good company 😊

The group was founded by Linda Harkness, Support Practitioner, and it has become a real highlight of the week.

Dorothy Sarabia, Support Practitioner, tells us more:

“It was Linda [Harkness] from Barley hill who is the founder of this and I think that the people we support are really benefitting from this kind of activity, especially during summer. We go for a walk and after that some of us will have a chit chat and a cup of tea and others haven’t had their lunch yet and they can order from the kiosk for their meal which they enjoy. Also we celebrate birthdays, like with Gordon we celebrated his 60th birthday in the bowling alley with the walking group.”

Social care is full of different roles, and not all of them are what you'd expect.

One example is our Responder service in Argyll & Bute. When someone presses their Telecare alarm, such as after a fall, our Support Practitioners go to them, assess their needs and work to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions. This service helps people keep living in the home and community they love.

L E T ' S B O O G I E 🪩

The Forth Valley Forum went disco this week. The people we support understood the assignment, and came out in their best disco outfits.

There was plenty of dancing and karaoke, and some real stars on the mic.

Off the dance floor, people shared their feedback on the support they receive. We listen to every word, because it helps us get things right for them. 😊

Anthony's latest hobby has us smiling: rock painting! 🎨

He's been heading down to Nigg Beach to find the perfect stones, then giving them a splash of colour and turning them into little works of art. Some of his rocks have found a really special home too, as part of a memorial he's created for his Mum.

Such a fun way to get creative, spend time outdoors, and make something meaningful along the way. And with Ant celebrating his 60th birthday this week, it feels like the perfect time to share it.

It’s been another busy year for the Involvement Group.

They’ve sat on the interview panel for not just one, but four Senior roles in Carr Gomm, including the role of the Chief Executive.

Mike shares why it’s important that the group contributes to the strategic direction of Carr Gomm.

"It’s a pleasure and a privilege as someone who has had long-term support from Carr Gomm’s services to be able to assist and advise in the selection of senior managers within the organisation. All who are supported by Carr Gomm have the opportunity to comment on the service they receive, but members of the Involvement Group can influence the higher echelons of the organisation to ensure it continues to develop and continues to be one of the biggest and best providers of care services in Scotland."

When life feels overwhelming, it can be hard to see a way forward. That's where our Housing Support service comes in.

People like Charley had many obstacles in their way. She struggled to leave her house, lacked confidence, and didn't believe in herself.

"I lacked confidence, and I had extremely low self-esteem. I was very isolated, and I honestly didn't really believe that I had much of a future." - Charley, person supported by Carr Gomm

With support, things began to change.

"The support I have received has been life-changing, and I do not say that lightly. I have gained confidence, have higher self-esteem and a good sense of self-worth." - Charley

Today Charley is thriving, volunteering, pursuing courses she never thought possible, and building a life she's proud of.

We are looking for a Housing Support Practitioner to join our team in Campbeltown. You will work with people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, as well as those who need help to stay in their home. It’s about more than finding somewhere to live, it’s about supporting people to build stability, managing day-to-day life, and feeling connected to your local community.

Full training, including SVQ qualifications, is provided alongside regular support and supervision from your Service Manager. If you have experience in housing support, social care or community work, and want to help people live their best lives, we'd love to hear from you. Know someone who would be perfect?
