🇺🇦 80 років відданості та єдності: урочисте святкування ювілею СУБ в Единбурзі

В історичних залах Единбурзького Сіті Чемберс (City Chambers) відбулася визначна та глибоко зворушлива подія - урочисте відзначення 80-річчя Союзу Українців у Великій Британії (AUGB). Захід був спільно організований Лорд-провостом Единбурга Робертом Олдріджем та Единбурзьким відділенням СУБ під керівництвом Ханни Бітон-Гаврилюк.
Цей вечір об'єднав ветеранів організації, членів СУБ із багатьох міст Шотландії, представників громадськості та дипломатичного корпусу.
Зі сцени лунали найтепліші спогади про історію найвпливовішої української організації в Королівстві. Чудові, емоційні та змістовні промови виголосили голова Единбурзького відділення Ханна Бітон-Гаврилюк та її поважна попередниця Лінда Аллісон.
Особливі слова солідарності та підтримки висловив у своєму виступі Лорд-провост.
Консул України Андрій Мадзяновський у своїй промові відзначив фантастичну та потужну роль СУБ, яку організація відіграє впродовж усіх цих років для збереження українства.
Коли перше покоління українців прибуло до Шотландії у 1946 році, вони привезли з собою лише незламний дух. І вони побудували спадщину, яка назавжди закарбувалася на шотландській землі: від каплички в Локкербі та Тризуба на схилі в Дінгуолі до Українських домів. Символічно, що й будівля Консульства України в Единбурзі на Windsor Street - це колишній Український дім, колись переданий СУБ нашій державі. Сьогодні, під керівництвом Петра Ревка на національному рівні, Ханни Бітон-Гаврилюк в Единбурзі та її колег у Глазго, Данді й Абердині, СУБ переживає нову золоту еру. Це десятки суботніх і недільних шкіл, мистецькі гуртки, хори та танцювальні колективи.
А з 2022 року організація стала справжнім щитом і рятівним колом для 30 тисяч нових українських біженців у Шотландії. Консульство України висловлює безмежну вдячність Лорд-провосту Единбурга за теплу гостинність і повагу до нашої громади. Низький уклін усім членам та ветеранам СУБ за 80 років безкомпромісної вірності Україні.

🇺🇦 80 years of dedication and unity: a solemn celebration of the Ukrainian Union of Great Britain (AUGB) anniversary in Edinburgh.

A significant and deeply moving event took place in the historic halls of Edinburgh City Chambers - a solemn celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Ukrainian Union of Great Britain (AUGB). The event was jointly organized by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Robert Aldridge, and the Edinburgh branch of the Ukrainian Union of Great Britain, led by Hannah Beaton-Hawryliuk. This evening brought together veterans of the organization, members of the Ukrainian Union from many cities in Scotland, representatives of the public and the diplomatic corps.
The warmest memories of the history of the most influential Ukrainian organization in the Kingdom echoed from the stage. Wonderful, emotional and meaningful speeches were delivered by the head of the Edinburgh branch, Hannah Beaton-Hawryliuk, and her respected predecessor, Linda Allison.
The Lord Provost expressed special words of solidarity and support in his speech.
The Consul of Ukraine Andrii Madzianovskyi noted the fantastic and powerful role that the SUB has played throughout all these years in preserving Ukrainianness.
When the first generation of Ukrainians arrived in Scotland in 1946, they brought with them only an indomitable spirit. And they built a legacy that is forever etched on Scottish soil: from the chapel in Lockerbie and the Trident on the slope in Dingwall to the Ukrainian Houses. Symbolically, the building of the Consulate of Ukraine in Edinburgh at Windsor Street is the former Ukrainian House, once transferred to our state by the SUB.
Today, under the leadership of Petro Rewko at the national level, Hannah Beaton-Hawryliuk in Edinburgh and her colleagues in Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen, the AUGB is experiencing a new golden era. These are dozens of Saturday and Sunday schools, art groups, choirs and dance groups. And since 2022, the organization has become a real shield and lifeline for 30 thousand new Ukrainian refugees in Scotland.
The Consulate of Ukraine expresses its boundless gratitude to the Lord Provost of Edinburgh for his warm hospitality and respect for our community. A low bow to all members and veterans of the SUB for 80 years of uncompromising loyalty to Ukraine.

🌻 Наприкінці серпня на українських полях зацвітають соняшники. Серед цих квітів у серпні 2014 року відбувалися страшні події Іловайської трагедії. Коли українські військові виходили з оточення під час “зеленого” коридору, їх підступно атакували російські воєнні злочинці.

Так соняшник став символом пам’яті про полеглих захисників і захисниць України 🕯

Щороку 29 серпня ми вшановуємо всіх, хто віддав своє життя, обороняючи Україну, впродовж уже понад 12 років опору російській агресії.

Ми пам’ятаємо їхні обличчя, імена та історії. Схиляємо голови перед кожною і кожним за віддане за Україну життя.

Світла та вічна памʼять!

For 1,104 days, Ukrainian Marine and defender of Mariupol David Pradchenko endured Russian captivity, where prisoners were regularly moved between cells to prevent them from forming close bonds. His testimony offers a glimpse into the isolation and brutal reality of Russia’s prison system.
Once a month, our cells could be shuffled to change people's places.
To move us around so we wouldn't be too close with each other, like friends.
But sometimes we could stay for six months and even more with the same group. The mayor of Kherson, Mykolaienko, was there with us. I must say he is a tough guy!
Then there was that American I mentioned. But most of all, I remember Pasha, may he rest in peace. The one who hanged himself. That's who I remember most.

26 серпня Консул України в Единбурзі Андрій Мадзяновський на запрошення наглядової Ради відвідав Королівський ботанічний (Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh) — одну з найвідоміших та найавторитетніших ботанічних і наукових установ Великої Британії та світу.

Заснований у 1670 році, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh має понад 350 років історії — від невеликого «фізичного саду» для вирощування лікарських рослин до сучасного глобального центру досліджень біорізноманіття, ботанічної науки, охорони природи та освіти.

Сьогодні RBGE — це не лише унікальний історичний сад у самому центрі Единбурга. Це наукова установа світового рівня, діяльність якої охоплює дослідження рослин і грибів, генетику та DNA-дослідження, таксономію, збереження біорізноманіття та боротьбу з наслідками глобальної зміни клімату. Сад співпрацює з партнерами у десятках країн світу.

Особливу цінність становлять його унікальні колекції. Жива колекція RBGE налічує близько 13 500 видів рослин із 157 країн, а гербарій містить близько 3 мільйонів зразків, деякі з яких датуються ще XVII століттям.

Сад має особливий історичний статус. Його очолюють Regius Keepers — керівники, які протягом століть поєднували науковий авторитет, управлінський досвід та міжнародне визнання.

Нинішня очільниця Джулія Найтс (Professor Julia Knights FRSB CHort), яка у 2026 році стала 17-ю Regius Keeper, є першою жінкою в 355-річній історії установи, яка очолила Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Її професійний шлях охоплює понад 20 років роботи у сфері biodiversity, conservation and climate change, а також дипломатичну службу Великої Британії.

Під час візиту Консул України мав можливість поспілкуватися з професором Джулією Найтс та її заступником - професором Пітером Холінгсвортом (Professor Peter Hollingsworth CBE, Deputy Keeper and Director of Science), який є всесвітньовідомим фахівцем у галузі збереження рослинного біорізноманіття, генетики та DNA-досліджень і одночасно Visiting Professor в University of Edinburgh та Heriot-Watt University.

Під час зустрічі обговорювалися можливості розвитку українсько-шотландської наукової співпраці, зокрема перспективи налагодження контактів між Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh та Національним ботанічним садом імені М.М. Гришка НАН України в Києві.

Йшлося, зокрема, про можливість подальшого професійного обміну, співпраці між науковцями та перспективу підготовки відповідної угоди про співпрацю між двома ботанічними установами.

Для української сторони така співпраця може мати особливе значення у сферах збереження біорізноманіття, ботанічних досліджень, охорони рослинних колекцій, освіти та відновлення природної спадщини України.

Консул України висловив щиру вдячність Professor Julia Knights та Professor Peter Hollingsworth за надзвичайно цікаву та змістовну екскурсію, гостинність і відкритість до подальшої співпраці.

Окрема подяка — Родді Гоу, директору Інституту геополітики "Азія-Шотландія", завдяки його ініціативі та сприянню відбувся цей особливий візит.

Особисте запрошення до такого формату зустрічі є важливим знаком уваги та довіри і свідчить про готовність Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh розвивати контакти з Україною не лише на рівні дипломатичного діалогу, а й у сфері науки, освіти та збереження природної спадщини.

🇺🇦🌿 Visit of the Consul of Ukraine to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

On August 26, the Consul of Ukraine in Edinburgh, Andrii Madzianovskyi visited the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh — one of the most famous and authoritative botanical and scientific institutions in the UK and the world.

Founded in 1670, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh has over 350 years of history — from a small "physical garden" for growing medicinal plants to a modern global center for biodiversity research, botanical science, conservation and education.

Today, the RBGE is not only a unique historical garden in the heart of Edinburgh. It is a world-class scientific institution, whose activities include plant and fungal research, genetics and DNA research, taxonomy, biodiversity conservation and combating the effects of global climate change. The garden collaborates with partners in dozens of countries around the world.

Its unique collections are of particular value. The RBGE’s living collection includes around 13,500 plant species from 157 countries, and the herbarium contains around 3 million specimens, some dating back to the 17th century.

The garden has a special historical status. It is headed by Regius Keepers – leaders who have combined scientific authority, management experience and international recognition over the centuries.

The current Professor Julia Knights FRSB CHort, who in 2026 became the 17th Regius Keeper, is the first woman in the 355-year history of the institution to head the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Her professional career includes over 20 years of work in the field of biodiversity, conservation and climate change, as well as the British diplomatic service.

During the visit, the Consul of Ukraine had the opportunity to talk to Professor Julia Knights and her deputy – Professor Peter Hollingsworth CBE, Deputy Keeper and Director of Science. Professor Hollingsworth is a renowned expert in the field of plant biodiversity conservation, genetics and DNA research and is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University.

During the meeting, the possibilities of developing Ukrainian-Scottish scientific cooperation were discussed, in particular, the prospects for establishing contacts between the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the M.M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden of the NAS of Ukraine in Kyiv.

The discussion included, in particular, the possibility of further professional exchange, cooperation between scientists and the prospect of preparing a relevant agreement on cooperation between the two botanical institutions.

For the Ukrainian side, such cooperation may be of particular importance in the areas of biodiversity conservation, botanical research, protection of plant collections, education and restoration of the natural heritage of Ukraine.

The Consul of Ukraine expressed sincere gratitude to Professor Julia Knights and Professor Peter Hollingsworth for an extremely interesting and informative excursion, hospitality and openness to further cooperation.

Special thanks to Roddy Gow, Director of the Asia-Scotland Institute of Geopolitics, it was thanks to his initiative and support that this special visit took place.

A personal invitation to such a meeting format is an important sign of attention and trust and indicates the readiness of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to develop contacts with Ukraine not only at the level of diplomatic dialogue, but also in the field of science, education and conservation of natural heritage.

Вчора на George Square в Единбурзі в рамках фестивалю Фріндж (Edinburgh Festival Fringe) відбувся концерт дитячого зразкового фольклорного колективу «Веселка» з Харкова. Вокальна та хореографічна майстерність дівчат, їхня енергія та щирість вразили присутніх та подарували глядачам справжнє свято української культури. Цей виступ "Пісенний міст - Харків-Единбург" та перебування колективу в Единбурзі стали можливими завдяки зусиллям організатора візиту Віталії Мельник та підтримці Единбурзького відділу Союзу Українців у Великій Британії (AUGB) і благодійної організації Hibernian Community Foundation.
Приємним доповненням до програми став виступ юної української співачки Маріанни Мельник разом із шотландськими друзями .
А вже сьогодні, 26 серпня, вихованці колективу разом зі своїм керівником Каріною Вакуленко завітали в гості до Консульства України. Діти передали символічний подарунок — статуетку-символ Харкова, та виконали для працівників установи чудову пісню.
Консульство України щиро дякує нашим талановитим дітям з фолькльорного колективу "Веселка", Единбурзькому відділу AUGB, Hibernian Community Foundation та всім, хто допоміг організувати цей візит. Подібні культурні ініціативи нашої молоді є надзвичайно важливими для зміцнення зв'язків між містами України та Шотландії.

Yesterday, as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, a concert was held in George Square, Edinburgh, featuring the ‘Veselka’ children’s folk ensemble from Kharkiv.
The girls’ vocal and choreographic skills, along with their energy and sincerity, treated the audience to a true celebration of Ukrainian culture.
This performance and the group’s stay in Edinburgh were made possible thanks to the joint efforts and support of the Edinburgh branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB), led by Hanna Beaton-Hawryliuk, the charitable organisation Hibernian Community Foundation, and Vitalia Melnyk. A delightful addition to the programme was a performance by the young Ukrainian singer Marianna Melnyk alongside her Scottish friends.
And today, 26 August, the ensemble’s pupils, accompanied by their director Karina Vakulenko, paid a visit to the Consulate of Ukraine. The children presented a symbolic gift – a statuette representing Kharkiv – and performed a wonderful song for the staff of the Consulate.
The Consulate of Ukraine extends its sincere thanks to our talented children from the ‘Veselka’ folk ensemble, the Edinburgh branch of the AUGB, the Hibernian Community Foundation, and everyone who helped organise this visit. Such cultural initiatives by our young people are extremely important for strengthening ties between cities in Ukraine and Scotland.

🇺🇦 35 років Незалежності України: голос України у британських медіа

24 серпня, з нагоди 35-ї річниці Незалежності України, Консул України в Единбурзі Андрій Мадзяновський дав інтерв’ю британському інформаційному агентству Press Association (PA).

Під час розмови йшлося про значення Незалежності України, боротьбу українського народу проти російської агресії та підтримку України з боку Великої Британії і, зокрема, Шотландії.

Консул наголосив, що Україна продовжує боротьбу за своє існування, свободу та право самостійно визначати власне майбутнє. Ця боротьба має значення не лише для України, а й для всієї Європи, адже йдеться про захист свободи, демократії та європейських цінностей.

Окремо Андрій Мадзяновський висловив вдячність Шотландії та її громадянам за підтримку українців, які були змушені залишити Україну через повномасштабну російську агресію. Саме людська солідарність, готовність відкривати домівки для українських родин та постійна підтримка України стали важливою частиною українсько-шотландських відносин.

🇺🇦 35 years of Ukrainian independence: Ukraine’s voice in the British media

On 24 August, to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, Andrii Madzianovskyi, Consul of Ukraine in Edinburgh, gave an interview to the British news agency Press Association (PA).

The conversation focused on the significance of Ukraine’s independence, the Ukrainian people’s struggle against Russian aggression, and the support for Ukraine from the UK and, in particular, Scotland.

The Consul emphasised that Ukraine continues to fight for its very existence, its freedom and its right to determine its own future. This struggle is significant not only for Ukraine but for the whole of Europe, as it is about defending freedom, democracy and European values.

Separately, Andrii Madzianovskyi expressed his gratitude to Scotland and its citizens for their support of Ukrainians who were forced to leave Ukraine due to full-scale Russian aggression. It is precisely this human solidarity, the willingness to open homes to Ukrainian families and the constant support for Ukraine that have become an important part of Ukrainian-Scottish relations.

🇬🇧🇺🇦 Ukraine is grateful to the United Kingdom and Scotland for their unwavering solidarity and support.

Учора, 24 серпня, у День Незалежності нашої країни в Единбурзі відбулася подія, на яку ми всі так чекали, - четвертий щорічний благодійний концерт українського баритона Андрія Кумача та валлійського піаніста Джемса Коулмена, присвячений святу нашої Держави.
Як ми вже розповідали вам під час анонсу два тижні тому, коли до Консульства завітав продюсер Ян МакФарлейн, цей музичний проєкт став справжнім символом творчої солідарності між Україною, Шотландією та Уельсом. У залі New Town Church знову зібралася дивовижна шотландська публіка.
Консул України Андрій Мадзчяновський звернувся до присутніх зі словами глибокої вдячності за їхній витончений музичний смак та великі серця. У ці важкі часи шотландці не просто надали прихисток нашим жінкам і дітям - вони відкрили для них свої душі.Цей вечір ще раз довів, наскільки глибокою та давньою є українська культура. Коли у виконанні Андрія Кумача звучали шедеври Миколи Лисенка та світова класика, глядачі заново відкривали для себе Україну.
Особливим моментом стала розповідь про легендарного «Щедрика» Миколи Леонтовича — мелодію, яку щозими під назвою “Carol of the Bells” чує весь світ, часто навіть не здогадуючись про її суто українське походження.
Ми щиро дякуємо виконавцям, Яну МакФарлейну та кожному гостю за цей неймовірний вечір єднання.
Ми віримо у справедливий мир і чекаємо на день, коли зможемо запросити наших шотландських друзів на такий самий концерт, але вже під мирним і вільним небом України. Дякуємо, що тримаєте Україну у своїх серцях!

Yesterday, August 24, on the Independence Day of our country, an event that we have all been waiting for took place in Edinburgh - the fourth annual charity concert of Ukrainian baritone Andrii Kumach and Welsh pianist Jams Coleman, dedicated to the holiday of our State. As we already told you during the announcement two weeks ago, when producer Ian MacFarlane visited the Consulate, this musical project has become a true symbol of creative solidarity between Ukraine, Scotland and Wales. An amazing Scottish audience gathered again in the New Town Church hall.
The Consul of Ukraine Andrii Madzianovskyi addressed those present with words of deep gratitude for their refined musical taste and big hearts. In these difficult times, the Scots did not just provide shelter to our women and children - they opened their souls to them. This evening once again proved how deep and ancient Ukrainian culture is. When Andriy Kumach performed the masterpieces of Mykola Lysenko and world classics, the audience rediscovered Ukraine for themselves. A special moment was the story of the legendary “Shchedryk” by Mykola Leontovych — a melody that the whole world hears every winter under the name “Carol of the Bells”, often without even suspecting its purely Ukrainian origin.
We sincerely thank the performers, Ian MacFarlane and every guest for this incredible evening of unity. We believe in a just peace and look forward to the day when we can invite our Scottish friends to the same concert, but under the peaceful and free sky of Ukraine. Thank you for keeping Ukraine in your hearts!
