TELL TRUSS TO DO MORE TO END FUEL POVERTY | PROTEST ON 1ST OCTOBER

We've joined with local campaigners and unions to call on the UK Government to abolish and invest in renewables and energy efficiency.

Join us from 12noon on Saturday 1st October at Queen Elizabeth House, Sibbald Walk,

Bills are still rising in October and 40% of families are already struggling to pay for gas and electricity.

We can’t sit back and accept this. Join us in calling for:
- An immediate freeze on energy bills and ensure no household pays more than 10% of their income on energy
- Equalise the costs of unregulated fuels
- End the use of pre-payment cards which carry the most expensive tariffs
- Increase investment in home insulation and retrofitting
- Accelerate diversification from fossil fuels
- Bring all energy industries into public ownership

The Edinburgh End Fuel Poverty Coalition proudly brings together Frazer Scott of Energy Action Scotland and trade unions including the RMT. Please come along and share widely.

Executive Committee statement on below, expanding on the initial condemnation of the invasion we shared over a week ago. You can read coverage of this issue and several others from a working class perspective in the Scottish Socialist Voice (issue #574 out today). Subscribe at https://socialistvoice.scot/subscriptions

"The Scottish Socialist Party condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine as an unwarranted act of aggression, regrets that this long running conflict has reached the point of full-scale war, calls for an immediate cease fire and the pursuit of a negotiated political settlement which takes into account the desire for peace and security on all sides.

The SSP respects the sovereignty of Ukraine and the national rights of all minorities including those in the Donbas and Luhansk regions up to and including the right to democratic, independent self-government without outside interference whether that be from either the right-wing nationalist regime in Kyiv or the gangster capitalism of Vladimir Putin and his Russian oligarchs.

The SSP believes the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is a belligerent relic of the Cold War, one which fundamentally mishandled the opportunities the post 1989 settlement offered the world and did so in order to gain its own geo-political advantage. Its relentless eastward expansion has done nothing to promote peace in the region nor calm Russian security fears since then. The Ukrainian Government’s own actions since 2014 by disregarding the Minsk Accords have often contributed to that sense of insecurity.

The SSP stands in solidarity with the working class in Ukraine and Russia in their pursuit of peace and prosperity and the overthrow of their own capitalist exploiters and dictators. We applaud the courage of both those resisting this invasion in Ukraine and their counterparts in Russia protesting against the war despite facing the inevitable oppression meted out to them.

Finally, we call for an immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of Russian troops and a negotiated political settlement that delivers peace and security to all peoples throughout the region."

Lots of people stopping by the stall on Princes Street today to sign the petition and share their anger at the cost of living crisis. Over 1/4 of Scottish households are in fuel poverty - unacceptable in a country as rich as ours. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday you can find Colin and other Lothians branch activists campaigning in Edinburgh city centre. Stop by, say hello, and sign our petition demanding an end to fuel poverty! ://scottishsocialistparty.org/cost-of-living-crisis-demand-action/

We're pleased to announce that Colin Fox will be standing as the
Scottish Socialist Party candidate for the Liberton and Gilmerton ward for the 2022 Scottish council elections. Colin will be standing on a socialist platform:
🚫No to cuts and no to privatisation - The SSP have never and will never vote for cuts to public services - let's keep our schools, hospitals and libraries publicly funded, fit for purpose and away from the hands of private profiteering
✊An independent, socialist Scotland - We need to build the case for independence on the basis of making working class people's lives better.
🚌 Free public transport - for EVERYONE in Scotland - to cut emissions and reduce poverty.
🏡Housing justice - We need to build quality, energy efficient council housing and introduce rent controls immediately
💷£12/hour National Living Wage - Most people struggling to make ends meet are working for poverty wages. We'll put an end to that by demanding all employers pay at least £12 per hour.
