Following a lengthy and robust election process this summer, BASW is pleased to announce that Priscilla Kurewa has been elected to the role of UK Chair.

Priscilla joins fellow successful candidates Patriche Bentick and Carlene Cornish as members on BASW's Council. They will take up their roles at the conclusion of our AGM on 3 September.

BASW congratulates all candidates on their respective campaigns and thanks them for engaging so positively with members throughout this important process.

We also extend our appreciation to all BASW members for taking part and, in doing so, having your say on the future governance and direction of our professional association.

Public service reform with the integral aim of creating savings for services that have been on the sharp end of continual cuts and rising demand for nearly a generation makes transformative change very difficult to realise.

We are grateful to the Scottish Parliament for the opportunity to comment on these reform plans. Service reform is much needed. Scotland has multiple independent reviews which have been partially realised. Reform of public service should be bold and ambitious about outcomes, investing in tomorrow to create a healthier and safer Scotland.

If the Scottish Government plans to invest in prevention, reducing the effectiveness of our crisis support services is not the way. Sharing resource with health to draw additional funding into early support is overdue. Every recent report shows that our members and their colleagues are working beyond capacity in services struggling to cope with demand.

The questions being asked point to a drive to cut spending rather than improve outcomes. If realised, this would be dangerous and inefficient.

This event will provide opportunities to share experiences, exchange ideas, and explore both the challenges and opportunities facing independent practitioners. Attendees will hear about the range of support, resources and professional benefits available through the BASW offer for independent social workers, helping them to maximise their professional development and strengthen their practice.

Importantly, the symposium will also serve as a platform for independent social workers to have their voices heard. SASW is keen to engage directly with independent practitioners to better understand their experiences and identify the support, services and opportunities they would like to see developed in the future.

Whether you are an established independent social worker or new to independent practice, this event provides an excellent opportunity to build connections, contribute to the conversation, and help shape the future direction of support for independent social workers in Scotland.

Join us to network, influence, and be part of a growing community of independent social work professionals.
