FASD: Next Steps for Caregivers – Practical Strategies for Everyday Life

Our Next Steps for Caregivers course will run as a 1 day session on 5th November. This practical training focuses on real-life strategies you can use at home, school, and in daily routines to support children and young people with FASD or prenatal alcohol exposure. It is designed for parents/caregivers who already have a solid understanding of FASD (ideally having attended What is FASD? or FASD Unlocked).

In this course you will learn practical tools for:
- Using the neurobehavioral approach to reframe thinking
- Identifying your child's stress response triggers
- Supporting emotional regulation
- Facilitating positive transitions
- Talking to your child about FASD
And more!

All attendees receive a DIGITAL COURSE WORKBOOK before the training, so you can engage fully and start applying strategies straight away.

Book your place here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/fasd-next-steps-for-caregivers-tickets-1999502340325?aff=oddtdtcreator

This is a fully funded event for parents and carers in Scotland. For those outside Scotland, tickets can be purchased, with discounts for Adoption UK members.

New findings from Adoption UK’s reveal that four in 10 adoptive families across the UK are facing severe challenges or are at crisis point.

While adoption services are working well in the early stages, too many families struggle to access the long-term support they need as children grow older. The report highlights significant challenges for adopted teenagers, young adults and adult adoptees, with many unable to access appropriate mental health support.

📊 Key findings:
▪️ Four in 10 adoptive families are facing severe challenges or crisis.
▪️ Nearly two-thirds of adopted 16–25-year-olds had negative experiences at school.
▪️ 29% are not in education, employment or training – more than double the national rate in most UK nations.
▪️ Many adoptees say support services do not understand how adoption affects them.
▪️ Adult adoptees continue to face barriers accessing records, tracing birth relatives and finding adoptee-competent mental health support.

Governments across the UK acknowledge the need for lifelong support for adoptees, but this research highlights a gap between promise and reality.

Adoption UK is calling for a legal duty to provide lifelong, needs-led support so adoptees and adoptive families can access help when they need it, for as long as they need it.

Celebrating our amazing foster carers! ⭐️

❤️ Celebrating our incredible foster carers during Foster Care Fortnight ❤️

Today we've had the privilege of coming together to celebrate the compassion, patience, resilience and huge-hearted dedication of Moray’s wonderful foster carers.

The Fostering in Moray event recognised carers reaching important milestones in their fostering journeys and reflected on the life-changing difference they and all in our fostering family make for children and young people every single day.

Speaking at the event, Jim Lyon, Chief Social Work Officer and Head of Service, thanked carers for the extraordinary role they play in helping children heal, grow in confidence and feel part of a caring, supportive family environment.

He spoke about the remarkable commitment foster carers show by opening their homes and hearts to children when they need care, stability and protection most.

It was also a very special and emotional moment as we honoured Linda Wakeley’s 30 years of fostering service, alongside her late husband Dave, whose love and dedication touched the lives of more than 150 children and young people across Moray.

We’ll be sharing more of Linda and Dave’s remarkable fostering story later today.

To every foster carer in Moray we want to say a heart-felt thank you. Your care, kindness and commitment continue to change lives every day. 🌻

Thank you to our colleagues at SKIPS Educational for this handy guide to support parents.

They have created a one-page guide “When Something Goes Wrong Online – A Simple Action Plan for Parents.”

It is designed to help parents respond confidently if their child experiences something upsetting online, offering clear guidance on how to talk to their child about what has happened and how to report concerns through the appropriate channels.
