Amanda had worked in hospitality since she was 19 but during Covid lockdown she realised she needed something new.

Something that would always be interesting, wasn’t a desk job, would focus her mind and benefit from her people skills.

So she retook maths and English GCSEs and successfully applied to become a Special constable.

Today she is one of the many volunteers supporting policing in Cambridgeshire who we’re celebrating as national Volunteers' Week begins.

Amanda and her fellow Specials dedicated just under 27,000 hours to policing in the county in the past 12 months, while 53 police support volunteers gave more than 4,300 hours.
We’re also recruiting for Specials so why not visit our website to find out more and apply https://orlo.uk/FRPwF

Amanda, 34, said: “To someone thinking of becoming a Special, I would say do it. Don’t even question it.
“Challenge yourself, you’ll be amazed what you can achieve; not just for yourself but for the public too. It’s an incredible world out there, and what an exhilarating way to see it.”

“Jacob was a very unique man and always loved to make people laugh, this was one of his special powers. He was a very charismatic, funny and also musically talented person. He will always be loved and in our thoughts every day.”

The family of a man who died in a fatal collision on the A10 has paid tribute to him.

Jacob Hawden, 33, of Westbourne Road, Chatteris, died when the blue Vauxhall Corsa he was driving left the road near Littleport at about 3am on 17 May.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jacob’s family also said: “He was a loving son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin. He was loved by many and will be sadly missed by all that knew him."

Officers continue to appeal for information and dashcam footage from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the vehicle in the moments leading up to it.

Anyone with information should contact police online at https://orlo.uk/399gh quoting Operation Belowda. Those without internet access should call 101.

When two strangers pulled up at a house in our county earlier this month and offered to top up the gravel driveway for £35 with some spare they had on their truck, the owner thought it was a kind gesture.

The men explained they had the gravel left over from a previous job and needed to use it up so they could fit a digger on the back and it would otherwise go to waste. The gravel was a good match for the driveway, so the homeowner agreed.

However, once the men began unloading it, they declared it would cost £450 💸 🤨

The homeowner demanded they stop immediately and refused to pay ⚠️

Darren Moore, 57, has been jailed for ten years after he groomed a 14-year-old boy online and lured him to his flat for sexual activity.

Moore began communicating with the victim in early 2024, and despite being aware of his age, turned the conversation sexual.

Moore sent explicit photos of himself to the victim and encouraged him to travel by train to his flat in Ely, which is where he sexually abused him.

DC Dan Knight, who investigated, said: “The distress Moore has caused to the teenager, and his family, has been unfathomable, and I would like to commend the victim for his courage in reporting Moore, and supporting the investigation throughout.

"Grooming and sexual exploitation can have devastating effects on young people’s emotional development, mental health and self-esteem which stay with them into adulthood.

“I hope this sentence provides some closure to the victim and his family and shows that predatory behaviour towards children will not be tolerated.”

Rogue traders near Ely tried to charge an elderly lady a staggering £4,000 for trimming two trees last month 🌳

The “workers” turned up at her home unannounced and offered to trim a couple of her trees. She agreed, but when they finished the work they told her it would cost £3,000 and they would take her to the bank to withdraw the funds.

When they arrived at the bank, it was closed, so the woman offered to write them a cheque. The pair agreed but told her the amount was now £4,000 for the inconvenience.

Luckily, the woman later spoke to her son who realised this was the work of rogue traders and immediately cancelled the cheque.

Katrina has been a police officer in Cambridgeshire for more than 25 years and loves the job so much she plans to stay in response policing until she retires.

She’s always relished the variety of a role that can take you from being the first officer at the scene of a murder to providing support for someone in a mental health crisis or helping a victim of crime.

We’re recruiting to our Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP) and inviting people to apply.

Katrina said: “The best bits can be as little as a simple ‘thank you’. I like helping people in adversity and arresting suspects.

“Knowing you have made a victim safe and taken a criminal off the street gives you great job satisfaction.”

The PCEP is a two-year course focused on police skills and is not academically focused.
