Explore, learn and be inspired by the power of wetlands and wildlife

We look after 1,300 acres of wetland habitat and all the wildlife that call it home; as well as introducing people to this landscape and getting our visitors closer to nature. In winter we are home to thousands of migratory swans as well as tens of thousands of wintering ducks and wading birds. We put on daily commentated wild birds feeds, guided walks and special event days to help our visitors c

onnect with this spectacular wildlife and learn more about it. In summer we provide a safe place for some of the rarest UK species of bird to breed and raise their young. Whilst managing the landscape in a way that promotes wetland wildflowers and grasses that benefit the birds, insects, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Visitors can surround themselves with the wetland habitat as they explore the furthest reaches of the reserve along summer walks, explore beneath the surface of the water at the pond dipping stations and use equipment and identification materials available to find out about our incredible wildlife.

Well most of the forecasted showers missed us today, but made for an impressive skyscape all around us as storms rolled through the Fens.

Similar story the past two days although we thankfully have had some rain to refresh and top up our wetlands after a very dry spring 😌

We are the perfect site for mixed weather days...good weather days...any day come to think of it. Here are some reasons to visit now with today's highlights:

πŸͺΆ Crane x12
πŸͺΆ Grasshopper warbler (heard South of where summer walk meets tansy trail)
πŸͺΆ Bittern
πŸͺΆ Kingfisher

πŸͺ² Tansy beetle on the tansy trail
🌼 Meadow rue out in flower
🌼 Great dodder in stands of nettle along path to Reedbed hide and start of summer walk

Full list below πŸ‘‡

🩷 A pop of colour on a wet day thanks to moth morning.

We've a lovely selection of moths from last night, including several elephant hawkmoths.

These vibrant pink and green individuals feed on honeysuckle and other tubular flowers at night - by including a moon meadow or patch in your garden you could help feed these incredible insects and encourage biodiversity at home.

Tuesday are great for getting closer to a range of moth species at Welney, our guides open the trap at 7am (everyone welcome), we then have examples of the species on the Welcome Desk with our volunteer when the visitor centre opens for the day.
