Early this morning our crews were called to assist East Midlands Ambulance Service in the Oakham area.

The Technical Rescue team from Southern were requested by the incident commander to assist with a complex extrication from a property. The team worked alongside colleagues from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Oakham Station and the Arial Ladder Crew from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Birstall Station.

We wish the casualty a speedy and full recovery and thank the local residents for their patience whilst the road was temporarily closed to allow the Arial Appliance to set up.

Last week, Southern Blue Watch Rope Rescue team attended an incident involving a tree surgeon stuck upside down in a tree 🚨🌲

Initial Fire crews put ladders up and held the tree surgeon in place while they awaited the arrival of technical rescue (S40R2)

From here, Southern's team worked with fire crews to attach a rescue strop and create a rope system to lower the individual safely to the ground.

Southern is the only rope rescue team in Leicestershire, time critical jobs like this show the importance of maintaining this skill set and keeping it available in Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service 🚒🧑‍🚒

An absolutely massive congratulations to the the Leicestershire Rope Reacue Team who won 3rd place at this years UKRO Rope Rescue challenge hosted by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service

The team completed against colleagues from across the UK and Portugal to bag 3rd place out of 12 teams.

The event was held at a mix of stunning locations across the beautiful city of Nottingham over three days.

Not only is this a chance for the best teams across the UK (and further afield!) to battle it out, it also offers an opportunity for shared learning and helps grow our understanding and capability of rope rescue in real world scenarios.

Thank you to NFRS for hosting an amazing event, all of the sponsors and of course UKRO for all the hard work.

Congratulations to all the teams that participated, especially LFB London Fire Brigade for bagging 1st place and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service for taking 2nd. Both well deserved and hard earned!

Older People's Day is Thursday 1st October 2026.

Older people or those with disabilities are often more likely to need help in staying safe. However, you should be aware of anyone who may:

• find it hard to quickly escape from their home in a fire
• find it hard to fit and test smoke alarms
• feel confused by an alarm, such as dementia sufferers
• smoke – this is the largest cause of fatal fires
• be less likely to spot fire safety warning signs, such as scorch marks around plug sockets
• be hoarding, as fires can spread fast in very cluttered spaces, which may also prevent a quick escape
• be more likely to forget to put out things like candles, turn off ovens or leave cooking unattended
• use medical equipment that may pose a fire risk (for example, oxygen, emollient cream and incontinence pads)

Test smoke alarms for someone who may need help and help to keep them safe

Know the signs of carbon monoxide and test your alarms.

Carbon monoxide, also known as CO, is highly poisonous and can be deadly. It has no smell, taste or colour, so an audible CO alarm is an important way to help keep your household safe.

Your landlord must fit a carbon monoxide alarm in every habitable room of a rental property containing gas appliances, excluding appliances used only for cooking. Test these alarms regularly, and report any issues to your landlord..

It is also useful to recognise the main symptoms of CO poisoning: headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. If you suspect carbon monoxide is present, get fresh air immediately, call the gas emergency number on 0800 111 999, and seek medical attention if you feel unwell.

Today we joined Fire Service and other emergency services colleagues around the country and the world in paying tribute to all those who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Among those who died on this day 25 years ago were 343 New York Firefighters.

Their courage and commitment, their selflessness and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Today, at 13.46 - the exact time the first aircraft struck the North Tower (UK time) - we held a minute’s silence and lowered flags to half-mast across our stations and sites.

The anniversary is a chance to reflect and to honour the lasting legacy of those who did not return home.

🚒 A helping hand at Southern Fire Station 🚒

Christine visited Southern Fire Station after arthritis-related swelling left her unable to remove her rings. Concerned that her circulation could be affected, her daughter Sandra contacted the Fire Service, and firefighters Kasey and Dan safely removed the rings using specialist equipment.

Afterwards, Christine and Sandra enjoyed a cuppa while the crew shared some simple but important home safety advice, including checking that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are fitted and working.

If a ring becomes stuck, don't force it off as this can worsen swelling or cause injury. If the finger becomes discoloured, numb, extremely painful, or circulation appears to be affected, seek urgent assistance.

Christine was delighted with the help she received and has kindly offered to make a donation to the Fire Fighters Charity, which supports serving and retired firefighters and their families.
