🚒 A helping hand at Southern Fire Station 🚒

Christine visited Southern Fire Station after arthritis-related swelling left her unable to remove her rings. Concerned that her circulation could be affected, her daughter Sandra contacted the Fire Service, and firefighters Kasey and Dan safely removed the rings using specialist equipment.

Afterwards, Christine and Sandra enjoyed a cuppa while the crew shared some simple but important home safety advice, including checking that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are fitted and working.

If a ring becomes stuck, don't force it off as this can worsen swelling or cause injury. If the finger becomes discoloured, numb, extremely painful, or circulation appears to be affected, seek urgent assistance.

Christine was delighted with the help she received and has kindly offered to make a donation to the Fire Fighters Charity, which supports serving and retired firefighters and their families.

One of the sides to the fire service that is often overlooked is the incredible people that make up our control team. They are the ones that take your calls when you need us the most! Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Fire Control

Behind every emergency response is a Fire Control team.

As firefighters continue to respond to wildfires and other incidents across the country, Fire Control teams have been working around the clock, dealing with thousands of calls and coordinating resources in extremely challenging conditions.

Their professionalism, resilience and calm decision-making help ensure help reaches those who need it most.

Phil Garrigan, NFCC Chair, said, "We also recognise the extraordinary efforts of firefighters, control teams and support staff who continue to work around the clock in extremely challenging conditions to protect life, property and the environment."

It seems everyone is desperate for a swim! 💦

When her owners discovered she had taken herself for a dip in the nearby river. They did the right thing and phoned the fire service.

We committed two water / animal rescue personnel to the water. With support from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Wigston Fire Station and a local farmer she was lifted out and checked over by the vet before heading back for a well deserved nap.

We aren’t too sure how she got into the river, but hopefully she’s given up on her diving career! 🤿🏊🐴

If you are a farmer, work with or own animals. Please check your fences, boundaries and fields for any gaps or areas that they may get stuck in. We all know horses, cattle and sheep like to get themselves into some sticky situations! If you spot an animal in a **life threatening** situation, please call 999. You can also contact many charities and the RSPCA.

As always, thank you to the local farmers and machine operators who often come to the aid and support us with telehandlers and other farm machinery and also Chine House Equine Hospital for their ongoing support.

Unfortunately our partners from the Local Resilience Forum are unable to attend today’s event. However, the crew from Southern will still be attending from 14:00h to talk about all things water, fire, safety and showcase some of the Technical Reacue equipment.

This evening's severe alert from the UK Government, covering an area that includes Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, has been triggered by the "very high risk" of wildfires.

BUT PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT FIRE CONTROL IN LEICESTERSHIRE. THIS IS A NATIONAL ALERT AND PEOPLE SHOULD CONTINUE TO ONLY DIAL 999 IN AN EMERGENCY.

The alert requires all residents, landowners and visitors to avoid any activity that could start a fire, including lighting disposable barbecues, firepits and fireworks.

The general public should take steps to avoid the risk of causing fires. This includes:

Not starting any fires, including disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators and fireworks
Not starting bonfires or campfires
Not using barbecues (even those which are non-disposable) unless in a safe, controlled location away from vegetation
Disposing of ci******es and other smoking materials thoroughly
Not leaving rubbish in the countryside, or on or near grass or vegetation - this particularly applies to glass, which can magnify heat

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service is working closely with local authorities and other partnership organisations to help stop the sale of disposable barbecues, and to enforce and advise on additional fire safety measures.

Please help us by avoiding having open fires and being extra vigilant. Make sure to keep bbqs under control and away from fences and garden structures. Please use disposable bbqs responsibly and keep extinguishing media close by such as a hosepipe or buckets of water.
