THE PARISH COUNCIL shares residents' concerns about road safety and parish councillors are looking at starting a Community Speedwatch (CSW) initiative, an effective way of addressing concerns about speeding within local communities, where local volunteers - trained by the police - use radar devices and portable cameras either independently or in partnership with police community support officers (PCSOs) to monitor and record vehicle speeds in areas of concern or a specific speeding hotspot, and raise awareness of road safety issues. We have contacted the Office of the Police, Crime, and Victims' Commissioner for support: "The Police and Crime Commissioner has Safer Roads as a priority within her Police, Crime and Justice Plan and is really passionate about working with communities on this important issue".

FOLLOWING CONCERNS raised by a local councillor for Ramshaw parish ward regarding the condition of an abandoned property in Gordon Lane and the owner failing to maintain the property, the Parish Council has agreed to make a referral to Durham County Council. The prominent property is untidy and overgrown with trees growing out of the front and side. Empty properties which fall into disrepair because they have been empty for a long time attract vermin, become unsafe, become the focal point for anti-social behaviour, and reduce the value of other houses in the area. It is hoped that the owner will be identified and encouraged to bring the property back into use or, if this fails, enforcement action taken.

THE PARISH COUNCIL has agreed to install a lockable notice board near Ramshaw Play Area, Gordon Lane, to provide a central space to display legal notices, meeting agendas, and advertise upcoming events to the residents. There are other notice boards in Evenwood (Manor Street) and at Evenwood Gate (adjacent to the A688).

ALLOTMENT WAITING LIST: The sun's out, summer's in full swing, and applications for the allotments' waiting list are well and truly stacking up. Unfortunately, the list is being closed or temporarily suspended and no new applications are being accepted at present, due to high demand. Residents who have already expressed an interest, will remain on the waiting list. Allocations are made on a strictly ‘first-come, first-served’ basis, determined by the date an application is received, so residents will be offered a vacant plot only when an existing tenant decides to give up their tenancy and it is impossible to determine how long they might have to wait.

We are looking for a range of different stallholders and activities for our summer fête on Saturday 24th July 2027 at the recreation ground in Evenwood, such as local craft stalls; family-orientated entertainment; food stalls; music; and children's sporting competitions. CIVILITY AND RESPECT: The Parish Council has signed up to the Civility and Respect Pledge to demonstrate a commitment to standing up to poor behaviour and fostering positive changes to support civil and respectful behaviour. The Parish Council believes now is the time to start a culture change for the local council sector and it expects all councillors, clerk, and employees, members of the public, representatives of partner organisations and volunteers to be treated with civility and respect in their role. The Parish Council is committed to calling out bullying and harassment whenever it happens.

CORRUGATED FENCING (metal or plastic) is not permitted on any boundary of allotment plots and must be swiftly removed by order of the Parish Council. Any plot boundary fence must be see-through (e.g., wire mesh or low picket) to ensure all plots remain visible for site security and management. As a general rule, most allotment fences do not require planning permission if they are under 2 metres high (1 metre next to a highway used by vehicles) but tenants should always check before they erect or alter a fence.

THE RANDOLPH SOCIAL WELFARE CENTRE is a separate charity (no. 520785) responsible for the Welfare Recreation Ground at Stones End in Evenwood. The Parish Council is itself the sole trustee of the charity. The Trustee Board consists of all 15 members of the council. The purpose of the charity is the provision of a recreation ground; playing fields (football and cricket); sports pavilion; and children's playground for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Parish of Evenwood and Barony and the neighbourhood. Charity trustee board meetings are not open to the public and are usually held in private (unlike parish council meetings), but representatives of user groups are often invited to attend to report on activities. The pavilion building is used by Evenwood Cricket Club and Evenwood Town Football Club under a seasonal hire agreement.
