A massive thank you to Insignia Maritime for fitting in our Arctic 24 Lifeboat, Solent Rescue 1, for a lift and scrub yesterday (Friday 29th May).

After calling them up, they were able to squeeze us in last minute, and our hull is now sparkly clean!

Thanks again to Insignia Maritime!

Sunday (24th May) also saw Solent Rescue 1 take part in further joint training with the Coastguard helicopter.

The exercise involved practising the transfer of helicopter crew members onto and off the lifeboat. This provided useful experience for one of their trainee winchmen, who first observed demonstrations from the winch instructor before carrying out several practices himself.

The session also gave one of our trainee helms valuable experience working alongside the rotorcraft, maintaining the lifeboat’s position and responding to the pilot’s movements throughout the exercise.

Working alongside the helicopter requires constant communication, concentration, and teamwork, so a huge thank you to the Coastguard crew for another excellent training opportunity.

As part of Sunday’s (24th May) operations, Solent Rescue 1 carried out a valuable training exercise alongside Steamship Shieldhall.

The exercise involved practising the transfer and extrication of both one of our crew members and a casualty between the lifeboat and Shieldhall while both vessels remained underway. Exercises like these require precise boat handling and close coordination between crews to ensure transfers can be carried out safely.

A huge thank you to everyone aboard Steamship Shieldhall for their cooperation throughout the exercise.

Despite a busy bank holiday weekend our volunteer crew were back out yesterday evening (Tuesday 26th May) for one of our regular training sessions.

Training was briefly interrupted when Solent Coastguard tasked Solent Rescue 1 to a vessel that had run aground on the rocks near Bembridge. However, they were stood down shortly after as closer assistance was at hand.

Not a bad sunset for the journey home!

Sunday (24th May) proved to be another busy day for Solent Rescue 1.

The day began with assisting a sailing vessel suffering from an overheated engine and drifting without power. Our crew established a tow and brought the vessel safely ashore.

Shortly afterwards, the crew were tasked to assist three teenagers who had become stuck in mud. Unfortunately, conditions prevented the lifeboat from getting close enough to safely recover them, but our crew maintained visual contact throughout and liaised closely with Coastguard land teams while the casualties successfully self-extricated.

The day finished with another callout to assist a vessel taking on water. Our crew, working alongside Seastart, helped to control the ingress of water and care for the people onboard whilst the vessel was towed back to safety.

Alongside the taskings, the crew also completed valuable joint training exercises with Steamship Shieldhall and the Coastguard helicopter — more on those to follow.

Yesterday (Saturday 24th May), Solent Rescue 1 was tasked to assist a jet skier who had suffered an engine failure, leaving them stranded more than 5 miles from their launch site.

Our crew located the casualty, recovered the individual safely onto the lifeboat, and then towed the jet ski back to its original launch location.

As we head through the busy bank holiday weekend, Solent Rescue crews remain on the water today and tomorrow, ready to assist those enjoying the Solent.

Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy the bank holiday weekend!

As we head into a sunny bank holiday weekend, we’d like to remind everyone to stay safe around the water.

Whether you’re heading out on a boat, paddleboard, kayak, jet ski, or simply enjoying the coastline, please remember to check tide times, remain wary of offshore winds and currents, keep an eye on children around the water, wear suitable buoyancy aids or lifejackets, and carry a means of calling for help.

If you see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Have fun this weekend and stay safe, from all of us at Solent Rescue.

On Sunday 17th May, Solent Rescue 2, our D-Class lifeboat, was tasked by Solent Coastguard to assist in the recovery of a capsized sailing dinghy.

After assessing the situation, Solent Rescue 2 towed the vessel to shore, where the crew were then able to enter the water and manually right the vessel.
