This year marks 20 years of Bikeability cycle training in Devon, and it’s a double celebration as we've been awarded just over £1.3 million from Active Travel England to continue delivering the training over the next three years.

This latest funding will support cycle training for around 9,000 children each year.

Since delivering the first Bikeability training sessions in 2006 more than 129,000 children in Devon have taken part in the scheme.

With warmer weather continuing to bring people to the coast, rivers and lakes, it’s important to be aware of the risks of swimming in open water.

Cold water shock, strong tides, currents and hidden hazards can affect even experienced swimmers. Taking a few simple precautions can help keep you and others safe.

• Choose lifeguarded beaches where possible
• Enter the water gradually
• Stay within your depth

If you get into difficulty, float on your back to help stay afloat.

Always keep an eye on children and less confident swimmers, and don’t forget to reapply sunscreen after getting out of the water.

With parts of the country reaching 29°C today, please share our Summer Water Safety advice to help keep your community safe around water.

⚠️Stay safe:

• Enter the water slowly and carefully
• Stay within reach of others
• Swim in supervised, lifeguarded areas

🛟In an emergency:

• If you fall in or become tired, stay calm, float on your back, and call for help
• If you see someone in difficulty, throw them something that floats
• Call 999
• If you're at the coast, ask for the Coastguard
